Backdate Turbo look to early RSR.

Is a Turbo look too valuable a platform to backdate?

Imho the 80's 3.2 cars are great daily drivers and touring cars.
That's why I've thought about backdating this one...
Seems everything could be reversable.

I would leave it alone, Mike, but that's just me. There is a following for the M491 option Carrera cars and they are relatively rare. It might be more valuable in the future unmolested.

That said, an IROC conversion would be more reversible and less expensive than a '73 RSR backdate. You just can't leave well enough alone, can you, buddy? :D

I agree with Tom. That car isn't the one I would backdate as it looks great now. I followed your 69 to Evo build. I would find something not quite as nice and use your mad skills and connections on a appropriate RSR. But as part of the pelican faithful I will support and follow your trails and tribulations of backdating a beauty.

If I owned your turbo look I would replace the whale; flat out sexy car.

I agree with Tom Tweed... go IROC'ish if anything, and then it will at least an easy "un"-conversion if time dictates you should. Beautiful car though as it sits!

I'd say turn it into a '73 RSR. It's a great platform for it. ...sure you might destroy the future value of the car but I think you would end up with a way more enjoyable car. -huge value there.

I thought about backdating my non-factory turbo-look to an IROC or RSR....I always thought it would have been neat to backdate (yep, before it became the cool/trendy thing to do).

...However, as more and more people do it, I think it just is starting to lose some cool factor. Just my opinion, but I think it's a little played out now.

Your turbo-look is pretty sexy..I'd leave it be!

I've never had a save the whales bumper sticker but it may be time to get a "Save the M491 Turbo-looks" bumper sticker. But of course if their number decreases by one then the remaining ones become more valuable so that may be why I hear the chanting in the background by the Turbo-look owners saying, do it, do it, do it.......

Buy another '84-89 to back date. With all the work involved, you might as well buy one that is cheap and needs all of that stuff anyways instead of taking off your good parts.

Keep me in mind though if you do decide to convert, I'd love to take the deck lid off your hands.

I still think it's a good idea. You've got turbo suspension and brakes under there - perfect for an RSR car. As for the comment of it being played out I disagree. I see tons of them here on the Pelican site but rarely do I see them on the road or at events although things may be different in "Porsche Paradise"

It seems to me that making a really cool hot rod impact bumper car, especially a factory turbo-look, is a more interesting challenge. Not to mention cheaper.;)

Caveat - I may be ever so slightly biased.

I'd leave it alone... however your dilemma actually allows you the perfect opportunity to start looking for another one... After all your wife said leave it alone! She is virtually telling you to buy another one... Isn't she?

She's savey to me now.
Pretty sure that logic only works once, she learned 3 years ago when she said you need another 911 and 2 weeks later the TL was in the garage.:)

The poll is leaning towards Turbo look.

Having read this I would only consider a faux RSR look, not intrusive and reversible.
I already have a perfect metal long hood, early rear deck lid and early doors with 935 mirrors.
I'm still on the fence.;)

If it were my car, I'd go with an IROC conversion. Personally I would go with the as delivered duck-tail look. It keeps the car in its natural state (short-hood) and makes into something more personal for you. All while being easily switched back to the original configuration.

If you went RSR you would have to cut out the rear panel that holds the PORSCHE lens on. Sure you could cut it out and weld it back in, but the car won't be original from that standpoint.

On top of that backdates never quite look correct unless you go over the top. The dash is wrong, the gauges are wrong, the interior trim is wrong, the black window trim is wrong, non-popout rear windows is wrong, etc. Not that I am against backdates at all, just when I concider backdating my car I sit there and think of all the things that won't look correct. I think a big part of feel of the pre-74 cars is the interior. Heck it is the part you see most when you are driving it.

That is why I would go with the IROC look, but in the end if you want an RSR look alike then by all means turn it into the car you want. You haven't really mentioned the cars condition. If it was a 10K mile garage queen that could win a concourse down the road then I might have second thoughts about changing anything, but if it is a run of the mill turbo look and you want something else go for it.

I would do the IROC.
It would be easy and is revisable. :D
