Smoking on the 405 . . . what gives
Last Thursday I was crawling along on the 405 at about 5 mph (LA Pelicans will know what I am talking about) when I see a big cloud of smoke coming from the tail pipe. This continued for a few miles then stopped. It hasn't occurred since.
I am pretty sure the smoke was black and not blue (touch wood). And it only happened at idle and at low speeds not on acceleration or deceleration. Also, the engine had only been running for about five minutes. It wasn't at operating temperature. Any ideas as to the cause? Thanks in advance. PS I just got through smog but am definitely burning too much gas.

Sounds like it is just that your engine had gotten loaded up and was running rich, due to the low speeds and temps. The cloud was probably just getting the excess fuel burnt out.

Hopefully you were no where near Calabasas - I hear smoking anywhere in that city is illegal!
