Carrera or SC for a noob
Ok I am posting with likely a similar question to others in the past. Due to some affliction or lack of skill, I cannot seem to locate any posts that sufficiently answer my knowledge gap. I appreciate your indulgence.
After doing a lot of reading and research, I am getting closer to taking the plunge into 911dom. Initially my direction was totally unfocused and after stumbling onto Pelican, has become much more directed. Thank you all. I had made up my mind on a G50 Carrera, initially. Because I live in an area that has few of any air cooled 911 for sale, my options for driving any are limited. Now, after a few weeks and reading more, my narrow focus of the g50's has become somewhat wider. I have included the 915's into the mix. Initially I was put off by the opinions of many that the 915 trans is inferior. But I should at least drive a couple, no? I recently drove a mid 80's coupe with factory short shift, and my desire for these cars is now cemented. My concern about the 915 was totally groundless. I don't know if it is because I learned to drive on the Old Man's aircooled VW camper or my prior experience driving a transport truck (18 speed NON syncro box), but I had absolutely no issues with the 915. So, now 915's are in. I am also opening my mind to the SC as well. This is mostly due to a for sale posting on Pelican for an 81 in the SF bay area. My issue with these is the CIS. I don't really want to muck about with this fuel injection and associated voodoo and black art crap. I admit that I am somewhat ignorant of this system and that's one of the reasons for my hesitancy. Would I be better off to stick with the Motronic? Is the power difference between the SC and Carrera noticeable? Acceptable? Is the weight difference really that much? Why? I know that the money saved could be put to good use for upgrades and/or repairs. Please inform me of any pitfalls and positives for either direction. Thanks, kevin |
I agree that the 915/G50 issue isn't a huge deal (although of course having had both, I'd rather have the G50).
But IMO you should stick with Motronic. It's a huge leap in modernity in injection. Really a full generation ahead. I've always been a fan of CIS, but it is pretty much an antique system now. |
Buy the best running you can afford.....SC versus Carrera....there's a fun war of words between the 2 camps.

This is not to bag on CIS, I drive one daily, but Porsche came out with another system and fully intended it to be better than the one it replaced. angela |

but if you got an SC, you could join the der Plot!
I agree you should set your budget and then find the best car you can for that money... as long as it's an Super Carrera of course;) |
