Not having seen a new bearing, it is my understanding that they are dual taper-roller, life-time sealed with grease in them?
Is your concern that the seals on the FAG won't keep the grease in? Was your old bearing SKF with seals still intact and grease inside? I noticed on the PP catalog that the turbo rear bearings have seperate seals; not sure how that works.

Gunter,
my concern is that the seals, because they are moving, will get hung up on debris between two places per bearing. the bearing is called a dual angled ball type. Old SKF bearing was fine. The issue is: 1 - old SKF bearing seal slides on the inner race and doesn't move relative to the car 2 - new/different FAG bearing seal slides on the outer race and move relative to the car This puts the seal moving very very close to lip and keeper flange where if any debris gets in there you have an issue. When the seal runs on the inner race, it is open and debris doesn't collect. Probably both companies make both types of seal setups, I don't know but I don't like at all that the seal moves right next to the inner lip and outer keeper plate. |

Interesting issue.
Someone with more experience on these FAG's hopefully chimes in. Wonder if SKF bearings would be available through a local Porsche dealer?

I purchased a SKF bearing from my mechanic...and it has the seal that slips on the inner race like one would guess. So I can repurchase from him. I was trying to support by buying from PP. This could be a "heads up" type issue with Wayne and PP... if I was PP I would want to be very sure why I was selling bearings, advertised as form and function the same, to hundreds of people that are different in a key design feature than the factory bearing.
I put in a thread on the "bearing" forum I found to see if I can find out what this type of bearing is really used for or what are the pros/cons of the different seal config. I can also call FAG on Monday and get the real story. I think there is a good chance Wayne was sold a bill of goods.. I hope he can get his money back returning 100+ bearings. Thanks much for your reply and following along... oh and I'm getting pretty good at taking these bearings in and out. Cool the bearing and heat the arm makes it a snap. |
