930S steering wheel sounds... "scratchy"

Started noticing a scratching sound as I turn my steering wheel. Sounds like plastic rubbing on plastic. New problem on a 930S wheel i've had for awhile. Before I start tearing it out/down, anyone ever experience this, and have suggestions as to what to look for/ or fix?

thanks

Check your steering wheel bearing by pulling the wheel and looking at the plastic "race". Chances are it's bad, this is common.

Pelican sells an "quick fix sleeve" that goes in the column to tighten things up. This might be what you need. Do a search it has been discussed many times before.

The horn contact may need some dielectric grease.

No scratching when I installed mine- but there is a loud click from the turn signal cancel when I turn the wheel. Anyone else experienced this?

Cheers,

Paul.

That's what it sounds like to me.

Paul, almost sounds like it was install improperly. Has it been installed for a while? I took my wheel off to recover it and reinstalled it wrong...I had issues with the canceller as well.

Thanks for good suggestions. Regarding the horn contact, does it simply need to be bent?

thanks

Plastic Rubbing

My car had a nasty plastic rubbing sound for a while and then one day became very wobbly (as in you could move the whole wheel up/down, left/right by ~1/4in). Kind of freaked me out at first until I hit the board and searched for steering wheel wobble and found loads of threads describing the problem and easy fix - as mentioned in the other posts: replacing your steering shaft bushing.

When the bushing begins to go bad, your steering wheel can sag/sit lower allowing the back of the wheel to come in contact with the plastic steering column housing (that covers your turn signal switch).

The picture shows my old bushing (green part) hanging around the steering shaft. Replacement is simple - search steering wheel wobble. Your problem may just be associated with the horn contact (the metal tab in the picture), but if your wheel feels like it wobbles some now, you may want to buy the metal replacement bushing and be done with it in one shot.

Good luck, Gordo

Does that bushing work on early 70's cars?

Make sure you lube the metal bushing well before it is installed. There was quite a bit of discussion on that topic a few months back.

I am not sure what you mean by early 70's but for my '73 the 928 bushing will not work. Check this thread: HELP! Steering wheel bushing quickfix???.

And, Harry, your car is technically a '73.5 which has few different things than an early '72.... right? (I'm looking at your sig.)

Wise Guy.....

Yes it is slightly different than the '72's and early '73's.

If you must know, the '72's and most of the '73's had a Bosch MFI system for fuel induction (We will ignore the '72 oil filler flap as yet another difference). In mid-'73, Porsche introduced the Bosch CIS fuel induction (K-jetronic) system for the 911T's (and I know how much you like them ). In '74 all Prosche 911 had CIS.

The gentleman who asked the question, wanted to fix his wobbly steering wheel. As part of the changes in 1974, the steering wheel bushing changed and the 928 part is a viable fix for that issue.

OK good buddy?

John Walker posted an advisory that you should grease the replacement when installing

I had a similar noise. I had already installed the bushing, so removed the steering wheel and added some grease per JW's suggestion. Reinstalled the wheel, and the noise was still there. Did several searches - someone suggested somewhere that the steering wheel lock mechanism might be causing the problem. So following that thread, I drilled and inserted a screw to hold the lock from engaging. Reinstalled the wheel and it seemed to have gotten rid of the noise. Until yesterday - the noise is still there. Not sure what's causing it - but it's not the lock mechanism.

Very nice....

I presume your problem is with the '73.5 T then. The biggest problem is finding replacement parts if you lost them.
