Rear Wheel Bearing Specs?

I shocked myself today at the Porsche dealers when I enquired about rear wheel bearings... $254.70 Australian Dollars EACH! I think that's around $200 US... EACH!

After searchng through the archives in relation to non-porsche rear wheel bearings, it seems there have been some possible "issues" relating to their fit. It would seem that SKF bearings are sometimes too loose and that FAG are a better choice.

Does anyone have the numbers for SFK and FAG bearings to suit the 911 (post 68 and non-turbo), or any experiences to share?

Thanks

I have had the unique pleasure of changing 6 rear bearings last season. It seems that the bearings made in Brazil are the problem, not sure which brand they were but SKF sounds right. If you can, specify a german made bearing. They should be about 50.00 each US.
In my experience it hasn't been a fit issue but they have worn very quickly ie. <100 laps at Sebring....Ouch.

Cheers, James

The SKF rear number is FW161. When purchasing, open the package and inspect for country of origin stamping on the actual part. It is extremely common for these items to be reboxed amongst differing distributors. The box often doesn't match the contents orginal mfg. Avoid the brazilians.

I understand from my female friends that while "brazilians" are just about a requirment these days, they can be a bit painful....

I seem to remember looking up a rear bearing for my car on our hosts site, and it was about $40 US...might not be the best option in AUS, however...

Yeah Jake, that was my thinking. I always buy the hard to get stuff from Pelican, but something like bearings - I should be able to source in Aus if I can track the number.

Thanks smcdermaid, do you recall if they were the "Brazillians"?

Cheers

I thought the same thing, so I went down to y local Napa...and got the correct and oh-so-common bearing just the other day. $90 dollars american! Ouch I said. They looked, shrugged and said "Porsche". Stupidly I was in a rush on the way to drop off the trailing arm at the shop to get it pressed in, and I hadn't checked Pelican. Dumb way to spend $40 extra dollars....and i could have given Pelican some biz, which i try to do often.

Fishcop,

FW161 is an SKF # and should be from a Swedish or German plant. However, it is essential to look for country of origin on the actual part if you want to be sure. It would not be uncommon for there to be 4 FW161 boxes on a shelf and the bearings inside be from 3 different manufacturers.

Just in case someone will search for the rear bearing numbers...

Yesterday I went to local shop that sells almost all kind of bearings, and when I gave that numer: FW161 to the seller - the guy said that it says nothing to him. Then he picked a big catalogue asked what's my car model, year, capacity etc. went to the shelf and here they are:

Brand new SKF's rear bearings.

The serial number is visible on the box and bearing.

I'm gonna have a busy weekend.

Bearings

John, the front bearings are really cheap I think the last lot I bought were $20.00 Aus for inner and outers they are identical part numbers to a HQ. Quite common in AUS.

Thanks
