Dropped in on Radio Shack this AM to pick up an in-line fuse holder because this board had me worried about fire! $1.72 plus fuse. Cut hot wire to the fan--soldered in the fuse holder easy enuf but then figured that while in there I ought to check the fan. GOOD MOVE! Found the motor bearings to be quite dry and when I ran the fan on the bench was getting some minor squeals already. (TIP--Radio Shack sells a 12V power supply--I think mine cost $15 years ago--VERY useful in working on any auto electrical stuff on the bench) Pulled fan all apart--cleaned and lubed motor--and before returning it, removed the battery to check for acid. Another GOOD MOVE! Found a patch of acid cancer under the battery mat.
Everything is now neutralized and cleaned up and ready for some protection. Do any of you know if the thick rubbery spray similar to what Porsche uses is available and where? Would like to finish it off nicely before putting everything back together. NOTE: I also found two cracks in the fan shroud which I fixed with Epoxy. Thanks for any refinish ideas! George 86 911T |
