not only a 4 banger, but a 1600 4 banger. Anyone here who has driven a 914 knows they have no power...
So with the wide body kit and all that on that 912, that thing probably can't top 80MPH. I mean...you can't even frighten people with a volkswagon sound...

Wing of a Turbo, heart of a Bug.

A "Very Rare 1967 912 Convertible conversion wide body Porsche" indeed!

I guess it's a good idea if you've got a 16-year-old who wants a sportscar. If you catch him street racing in it, you can run up alongside him and tell him to slow the heck down.

To me, seeing that kind of car is heartbreaking. That someone put that kind of money and/or man-hours into a car to get it to look like that...it's sad. And he honestly thinks it's worth $20,000!

Emanuel,
The really sad part is that some jack ass will probably pay that much for it!

Jeez you guys saved me again. I was all ready to bid on this. I thought it was a real genuine 1967 912 RSR Convertible.

What an incredible waste of time and money!

This car really isn't any different than the VW bug / 356 Speedster style kit cars. Just happens to be a 912 instead of a Bug.
The true tragedy with these kits is the money spent. The car looks really cool but would cost a tremendous amount to further convert the power train and suspension to any kind of acceptable performance level. Coverting a 912 to a 911 is just not economically feasible. I'm afraid this car is probably forever doomed to be a no-go-show-boat.

But look at the windshield...right off a genuine 3.2 Speedster...and the lookalike Strosek spoiler... http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/rolleyes.gif

I'm with Rarly on this one. I like the look and can imagine doing a fabcar/smartracing 935 suspension and a built 3.3 turbo. I can't imagine myself having the bank account to do do it though. I also like the 935's but to do those right you pretty much have to build a 935. Ka Ching $$. Where is my winning lotto ticket?

Not that I ever would try such a thing, but I am curious why you can't put a 911 motor and tranny in a 912 of the same year....

Why not?

I can and has been done. It's just very expensive and involved. Too many differences. The suspension and brakes are also not up to par. A total rework of every system is needed.

The engine in a '65 to '69 912 is a PORSCHE engine, not a volkswagen. It is the same engine that was in the 356C (our heritage!), a Super 90 engine. The 76 912E and 914 has the VW 4-banger. The brakes in the '65 to '69 912 are the same in the 911 for those years and the 911 and 912 both used the 901 transmission. The early 1600cc 912 weighed 250 pounds less than the 2.0L 911. The 912 was slower, but it makes a great track car.
There are lots of 912s converted to 911s. The main considerations are the rear motor mount and the 912 does not have an oil tank.
That waste of money on ebay is as much of an insult to my 912 as it is to your 911's.

I have to admit, I have a small case of "horse power envy" and it causes me to get defensive about my misunderstood 912 http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

The 912 is a ballance car in its' own right, but would you want late 60's 911/912 brakes, suspension, and a 901 tranny mated to the turbo motor that this car begs for?

Ads912 05-15-2001 07:15 PM

RarlyL8,
I agree with you. The car is a total mismatch of old and new. It has the same philosohpy as the 917 and GT40 kits with the 4 cylinder engines. It is all image. My teeny-bopper sister would really dig it!

Now that's a Poser!

Ads912 05-15-2001 07:25 PM

It sure is. I wonder if it comes with a casette tape of 911 engine sounds that you can play really LOUD while you drive it around! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

pwd72s 05-15-2001 07:36 PM

9X1? You asked why not? A 912 turned hot? Take another look at that sexy slide valve engine on the Cambria post started by Jack O.
Uh, wanna guess the donator chassis? One of your first three guesses would be right on! You're looking at a "no show, ALL GO!" car!
