My 1977 Targa
I want to replace my black trim piece around the rear windshield on my Targa. I was told to not risk changing it out because of the risk of damaging the windshield. Any suggestions. I was told to just use trim paint.
Anyone have any good shops in Chicago/ Milwaukee area you would trust to install the trim. Or are there cheaper windshield alternatives other than the $1700 price in case the window would break. Thanks |

I've heard about a zippered plastic replacement that saves weight but don't know specifics yet. Maybe someone here can chime in on that option.

The targa rear window is very difficult to break. With that said, how about some more specifics about what exactly you're trying to do? If you're talking about the trim that goes around the lower portion of the rear window, it cannot be removed and replaced without taking the entire window out.

There was a glass guy around the milwaukee area who could do the rear Targa window, I will try to find his number for you. I believe Ben MK exhaust used him too.

There was a post here about a guy who had an extra targa rear window. He tried to give it away on Pelican but there were no takers. He took it out and tried to break it - mostly to no avail. Her reported back about how strong that window is.

Most restoration pictures I've seen show hidden rust under that rubber piece.
Could be a big can of worms - do you really want to open that can?

just r&red the rear glass in my targa to replace the seal, brain is rite , trim will come out but will not go in without removing window, it is a very tite fit. dont bother with the unversal plastic ones, they will not work, tried it. r&r ing targa r/glass is an all day job, had my brother help me who is a bodyman extrordinar and he said its the toughest he's ever done. you will also have to buy a new gasket, and oem (which is far superior to made in japan replacement) is not cheap

Wow a lot of good information. I'm trying to replace the lower trim left and right. Upper gasket probably needs replacement too.
So my question becomes how easy is it to paint the trim with flat trim paint. How good does it look? Someone must have done it before. There was a post regarding a Milwaukee guy. Please pass that along. Thanks everyone... |

No I don't want to find the rust. Better I not see it.
So painting the trim is probably the better option. Better yet -forget about it. Although when I look at the back window area, I don't see signs of rust. |

Just paint it with Duplicolor black trim paint. Or you can use semi-gloss if you want a little more sheen. You don't even need to sand. Just degrease, mask and spray. Looks very good. Just keep the can moving and don't go too thick. Folks have used this on their targa bars as well with good results.
