3.2 dist index after R&R
 

I did not pay much attention when I took my distributor our thinking it was keyed and would only go in one way.

Not!

I did pay general attention to the direction of the rotor. Put it in blind so to speak.

If the car starts right up and sounds fine are to odds good I put it back in the right location?

I took it out because the shop wanted to charge $200 labor and $50 to replace a leaking cam feed. It looks like the fitting at the block was just loose.

This seems like a half hour job for someone with a lift, tools, and know how. And that is with taking a 15 min brake. Took me 20min on the floor and I took the heat blower ducting off before I figured out how to get to it.

A 3.2L distributor is not indexed (timed). If it's in there, and running, you're good.

Thanks Jay. I know it is not timed. But you can put it in any location 360 deg around.

I guess I am wondering is if I am off one tooth, would the spark just jump from the rotor to the electrode and still run but not be right.

You must be close or it wouldn't run. I don't know if it could run when off by one tooth. To check you should be able to go to TDC on any cylinder and pull the cap off to confirm the rotor is pointed at a contact on the cap. Most dizzy's have a line on the outside of the case at TDC for number 1. The rotor should point at this line when on TDC for number one. It will point directly away from that line at number 4 TDC. (same place on the crank pully). If you were off by enough to fire at the wrong cylinder the car will not run.
