possible to thread an early shift stick for a shift knob?

I've got a '67 912 and my chrome shifter is pitted out and generally not great looking.

Does anyone know if the diameters and lengths are the same as on a '65 car, so that if I buy a rechromed shifter I can thread the top and mount my old shift knob?
