Everytime I see a cop, I get followed closely or pulled over the last few weeks...
Now I got pulled over for expired tags..they expired last month. Usually, you get the month late break, but I didn't, and that's fine. However, I showed him that I had already paid, and that I only needed smog, and then showed him I passed smog on Saturday, and that I awaited an appointment with the DMV on Friday morning to get my tags. This he ought to understand, in LA any DMV walk in results in a 2 hour minimum wait; hard to fit into lunch. So, it's just getting to the DMV and actually physically obtaining the tags, but I got the ticket anyway, which requires me to drive to a courthouse and prove it. Not necessary...in light of all that, I shoulda been let go, I mean come on. ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

What's so lame about it. You stated your registration was expired and you basically got a fix-it ticket. He could of just given you the ticket and not checked the Fix-it box. The key to not getting stopped for expired registration is to pay your registration and to get your car smogged on time or dont drive your car. STOP CRYING....

Naw, that isn't the way I see it anymore, Michael, and that isn't how it is declared in this country anyway.
If the law were dealt exactly as written, the Police slogan wouldn't be 'To protect and serve', it would be 'To Enforce' Specifically that is not the case. In fact, my failure to get smog done on time was specifically related to being unable to order, receive, and install the parts even though I had planned 2 weeks in advance. If the slogan were "To enfore" people could be cited for driving a block with 1 headlight even though the arresting officer witnessed the light burn out. I expect a police officer to understand the nature of a chaotic, statistically variant system, and not to be a ****ing jerk about his position. I signed my name. He looked at it "did you change you signature or something?" "No" "Well sign it again." I ought to have said, "Hey, you know why don't I just go ever there and drop my pants and you can ream me until you like a real man okay?" But I just signed it again, this time I guess more clearly. ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com [This message has been edited by Kurt B (edited 05-16-2001).] |

Kurt, well some could say that he is serving those of us who pay our registration on time by citing those people who are driving thier vehicles on public highways without paying the proper tariff.(registration)
In Addition, Why is the Police officer a jerk because he cited you for something you failed to take care of. The DMV sends out the notice for renewal and smog checks at least 45 days in advance which seems like plenty of time to take care of your car. The signature thing does seem alittle strange though. Whoa, I showed him my proof of payment, which was paid on time. That is, I paid on the web, my registration fee, and was mailed a partial completion notice stating the smog results only were needed. I handed him the letter so stating, therefore knew only smog was waiting, and I showed him smog.
And look, when I got my speeding ticket, which I fully deserved, my name was spelled Kurt BringHam. That's really funny...like I didn't hear that in grammar school. Cops are jerks. (It's Kurt Bingham, now unless he can't read, I'd expect that to be a no-brainer) Anyway... ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

The officer was obviously being a jerk because Kurt had taken care of everything and had proof to show it. He only lacked tags. I was in the same position once I first bought my car because the person I bought it from couldn't get the pink slip right away. However, I got it smogged, and got another paper proving I had paid for the registration. I did everything, and paid everything required of me, but I couldn't get the tags because I didn't have the pink slip to complete the transfer of ownership. The only difference is that I didn't get pulled over by some @$$hole behind a badge. BTW my car is blue. Some officers may be sympathetic, understanding, intelligent, competent human beings that know what they are enforcing. Kurt's story gives nothing to support this theory though, neither does Jack's story about the seatbelts.

Every cop under the age of 35 that has ever pulled me over, has been a completely arrogant, buzz-cut sporting, black glove wearing, militant jerk-off. The only civil, mellow cops seem to be the ones that are a bit older. As for the former, their cop cars should read: "to harass and annoy". Just an observation.

Hey Kurt, be glad they didn't arrest you. I was pulled over for expired tags, lunch-time, workday, in my 98 Dodge Ram worktruck here in georgia. I was handcuffed and brought to the county detention center and processed! My truck was impounded too. IN hindsight, I probably desrved it; my tags were 10 months overdue-also because I just couldn't find the time to wait in line for 3 hours! I figured," I'll just pay the $25 fine for being late-no biggie" Boy did I pay! Took me 9 hours to get out of jail and the fine was $125.00 plus the impound $75 plus the tags plus the $25 late charge. LISTEN UP!!!! PAY YOUR REGISTRATION ON TIME-NO QUESTION-NO EXCUSES!!!

Everytime I start thinking California would be a good place to live I am brought up short by one of these stories. Here in Mid-Missouri all you need to get tags is a safety inspection (every two years) and proof of insurance. In St. Louis I think you need an emmissions check. One nice thing about small towns (in my case 36,000) you know all the cops. Getting your registration renewed takes about 10 minutes. I think I have the only 911 within a 60 mile radius and the cops think I have the sharpest car in town. The only thing I ever get from them is a wave. The cops here really are to "protect and serve". Example, a few years ago I had the Harley (78 Low Rider) out and opened it up going over the bridge over the Missouri River just to hear that exhaust sound! Didn't see the cop till the lights came on. I was probably going 70 in a 55. He just wanted to tell me they had just put a concrete sealant on the bridge surface and it could be slick if I wasn't careful! No ticket.

Well, in CA, I think I know where the cop attitude comes from--we have an adversarial relationship with them. I've always been pro-cop, but with my hotrod, and the fact that I drive although not unsafely, but like I think I'm cool, I put a target on myself.
After I vented on this matter, I'm cool with it. I'd say, I tried to save money by prepping for smog alone and didn't take it to a mechanic to diagnose until I failed 2 times and then couldn't figure out why (I had replaced this and that, adjusted this and that...) and this process ran me out of time. Arrogance or Poor planning? Not really, things just didn't work smoothly, and the last owner had hot jobbed the airbox, and I didn't know enough to fix it alone. Horrible story about being arrested though! Ouch...the hardest part about that is you know there are people who saw you get arrested, but whom you'll never be able to track down and say "That was for expired tags by the way!" It'd be hard to deal with--if a lady gets arrested, people suspect she was just a b!tch, but if it's a male, people will say "Yeah, I saw em make a drug bust out there yesterday...some guy in a Dodge.." you know how stories wax over time! ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

Kurt, dont get me wrong I,m not tring to pick on you, it's just that the majority of the people on this board always feel like they are picked on when they get stopped by a police officer even though they admit they were violating the law. IE speeding, no front license plate or maybe even tinted windows. Technically your registration was expired and the only way you can operate yoour vehicle on the road legallly wouild be to get a 1 or 2 day moving pass in order to take care of your smog issues. Obviously that would have taken another day at DMV waiting in line and is a waste of time so you didnt do that, no big deal. All Im saying is that we all know what the spped limit is,that we need to have a front license plate on our cars and that they must be currently registered with the sticker on the plate or it is a violation. We take our chances, if we get caught,we get caught.
