Duck or Duck-less
 
Hi All,

I just had a fiberglass duck tail refinished in matching black.

My opinion is that is would look great on my newly refinished car.

My wife's got another idea. (Note that massive oil leak has been fixed).

Any opinions, should I go duck or duck-less?

I switch back and forth. Takes me about 30 minutes to switch out and get things lined up.

Once you mark underneath the tail where the brackets align, it is real easy to switch back and forth. I have 3 different tails that I changout. It is a 20 minute job, at the most.

Does it have RS flares for the rear fenders? If no (cant tell from the pic) I think the ducks look a little strong....If you are asking for an opinion.

I would go more the 911R look on an early narrow fender car. Really just ride ht and wheels. Maybe the rear qtr window with the slats in it....suttle but cool, also reversible.

Emily Post says the duck is appropriate for joyous occasions - weddings, track days, spirited drives up the coast or through the hills.

Duckless, on the other hand, is the correct attire for more somber outings, funerals, commuting, tax audits.

You have a fine, vintage GT car, not a track rat. Sell the tail and take the wife to dinner with the proceeds.

IMO, ducktails look out of place on a non-flared (RS or RSR) car. Plus, no hotrodded engine = no duck. I am sure there are many out there that will disagree with me, but that is my opinion. Besides, I am the kind of guy that would search out an SC or Carerra (if I wanted a buggy bumper car) without a whaletail - but that's just me...:p

Whatever you want. I have seen narrow body cars with ducks, the look is just OK, IMO.

I love a little tail now and then.

But not on a narrow body. And I love narrow bodies.

I don't know how many narrow bodied ducks you guy's have seen, but I think they look great.

We all love our Porsches and all have our one likes and dislikes. They also change over time. I remember the first time I saw a Gemballa 930 with huge exagaterated spoilers and tires the size of 55 gal oil drums. I hurt with desire. Now they look like cartoons to me. To someone else it may still be love at first sight.

One of the instructers at our local Porsche club had a 73 narrow body class car with a 930 tail on it. Yes it looked silly. However, the 930 tail is the best non wing spoiler Porsche designed. If you track it, a tail is a good thing but only with a matching front.

Put it on and enjoy it. However, do not sell you stock hood. You will regret it. There is a growing love and appriciation for long hoods with no flairs or spoilers. However, after everone else dose all there mods and such, the stockies start standing out.

Those year models are about the most beautiful designed cars ever, IMHO. Not least that slim, cute ass. A big chunk of fiber glass will ruin that for me. Besides trying to make it look like something it isn't. But thats just me. A fool for stock originality.

Duck tails are very period correct and look awesome. My 2 cent are go with out it. The narrow bodies look sweet with out them. Smooth as Silk.

I tend to agree with most of you. Go attitude with the duck when appropriate and duck less when a serious no nonsense tone is required. It's all in the delivery.

Count me as one who doesn't like a duck on a narrow body. And for the record, a narrow body is defined as having no flares at all...SC / Carrera flares are not a narrow body (and just enough to make a duck look very sexy). I will even go one further and say that a narrow bodied early car with a duck looks really out of place. (Sorry guys!) I understand for track rats who need a tail...great, go for it. But if you're just using your car for fun, don't bother.

If you do, be sure you have a proper front spoiler to help balance it...aerodynamically of course but also visually.

Now I'm going to contradict my own words and share a photo of my car....my narrow bodied car....with a duck. :rolleyes:

I blame the P.O. ;) Truthfully, I've been teetering on replacing it with a straight lid, but it's growing on me and those fatter impact bumpers help balance out the visual weight of the tall duck on the narrow body. So, it looks like it'll stay until I backdate the car. (IF I backdate the car.) Then I'll be clean and simple...the way an early 911 should be. :D
