Please help with ignition assembly
I am having a horrible time getting a '74 ignition assembly into my '81 911sc. It won't go all the way into place. (No, "That's what she said jokes" please) Is there a trick that I'm missing. Thanks a million. Rob

Well, it depends on what you mean by "ignition assembly."
If you mean "distributor," it will not work. It might (I dunno for sure) FIT into the hole -- sorry! -- but the '74 distributor turns CW, the '78-83 SC's turn CCW. If you mean "CDI unit" on the electrical panel, one version has a three-pin plug, the other six-pin. |
Rob , what are you asking ? ( axing)
Now I was thinking Rob meant " switch assembly " . I've found that if the allen set screw is not removed or backed wayyyyyyy out it can give you problems . I've also found that on some cars that it's faster to remove the 4 rivets and once in place re-rivet .
Rob , since we can't say "That's what she said jokes" , how about ............ What you talkin bout Willis ??? ? SxS (:D) |
Yep, its an ignition switch.
Sorry, It is an ignition switch. At one point I had that dude so close that only the threads were holding it back from going in. I may have to drill the rivets and re-rivet. When I pull the switch assly out, the ends show that the end at the steering wheel has wear marks from trying to get it in. I'm gunna try saturday to get it in the hole. :) I know, I know, That's what she said. Yeah, the "Whachu tawkin bout Willis" works too. Thanks Rob

Try inserting the key and turning it to release the steering lock. It may be pushing it back far enough. It's a tight fit if you don't remove the plate with rivets.

I'm gunna take my patient pills and give it a shot today. I'm gunna try the things mentioned here. I think the screw that holds the assembly near the column is about to fall out, so it should be back fur nuff. I'm probably goin to have to drill rivets. Thanks fur all the help. I really appreciate it. Wish me luck. SmileWavy I give an update later........

Its in
I finally got it in. This AM I went out and got it in in about ten minutes. But the key wouldn't trun. So I took the whole thing out and took the assembly apart and lithium greased the moving parts. I worked the key back and forth for awhile to get the grease moved around. After that I reinstalled it and Its been working since. FINALLY. Thanks to all for the ideas. SmileWavy
