Check this site:
http://targa.org.au/media/24April.htm http://targa.org.au/media/# It would seem that porsche cars can hold their own up against some of these hybrid sports hatchbacks which are designed specifically for rally! ![]() Enjoy! ![]() Ben [This message has been edited by 86ragtop (edited 05-17-2001).] |

Very true and the 911s dominated the event (winner of the classics too). However, the rules for the cars entering are quite restrictive to ensure that the event is as interesting for spectators as possible. From the car selection criteria:
(d) Inappropriate Vehicles These are vehicles for which an invitation is unlikely to be issued regardless of circumstances. Generally these vehicles will be: i. Vehicles which do not confirm to the definition of a sports car, or a grand touring car, or a pre-1982 (refer 4.2) car with a competition background. ii. Late model vehicles with no sporting pedigree or distinctive appearance and which in 15 years are more likely to be regarded simply as superseded models rather than classics. iii. Competition derivatives of four-door sedan or two-door hatchback cars, which have been developed primarily for contemporary rally competition. Applicants with inappropriate vehicles will ordinarily be advised quickly and encouraged to nominate a different vehicle. Excluding rally cars probably excludes the potential winners of the event. The cars in the Targa Tasmania are more interesting, sure, but a Group A rally car is made to win the event (~350hp, 4WD, built for rally stages and hence tough enough for the event). For example, the New Zealand version of the Targa typically has fastest time by some sort of rally car, although they are excluded from winning as they are deemed to be outside the parameters of what the event stands for (ie I think it is just a fun run for bragging rights for those cars). What I wonder, is if the Targa events down here were focussed on the BEST that modern machinery could offer and Porsche got behind it like they did for the original european Targa events, who would win then? Any bets on what Porsche could pull out of the bag (imagine a fully developed tarmac race 911 Turbo) to try and beat the Japanese rally machinery? I just did some more thinking, maybe the Porsche would win as is? It looks pretty good in the Targa Tasmania promotional stuff. Cam [This message has been edited by CamB (edited 05-17-2001).] |

Interesting stuff, Cam,
I, admitadly did not have time to read the whole site but it seems as you say designed to exclude the rally cars!. It is still nice to see porsches coming out on top!. I am getting interested in Porsches for rally purposes as I am starting to peice together a plan to build a 'hill climb' 964 Carrera 4 which may be supercharged. Hill clibs are popular in the UK where 89-91 C4's are cheap and i think with the added umph! the car may stand a chance ![]() This may in turm lead to other things. Rally? maybe ![]() rgds |
