door gaps
Replaced right door on my 76 with an 86 and the gap on the rear edge without
shims is 1mm and have no adjustment left. What methods are there to adjust the gap. Thanks for any help. ![]() |

I have two Porsche books that both offer a method to increase the rear gap, but I've never done it. The described method is to remove the door, but leave the hinges on the door post. Then, with a block of wood and a 5lb. single jack (sledge hammer), strike the edge of the hinges (where the pin goes) to move them slightly toward the front of the car. Sounds scary and certainly not precision, but that may be the way to go.

I have done this also and you can drive the hinge on the door in and pull it out also if needed, but make sure you have good bushings in the hinges first so your not fighting any sag. They may have used some body solder on the door edge at the factory on that 86 door and this may have to be taken off to get the correct gap.

The factory guys used hammers of varrying sizes -- and they had some pretty big ones for just this situation -- for all sorts of fitting tasks. I'd hesitate to do it as well but this is the first vehicle I've ever owned that did not have easily adjustable doors.

There is actually a TSB on this subject that does give a little bit of info about the BFH method.
