changing bolt pattern with adapter spacers
Hey all,
I have a 72 with 85 body parts and other internals. I was thinking about new rims and either going with some classic Rota Foxes or going with these adapter spacers that will change the bolt pattern to a more common 5x4.5 pattern like Has anyone used these before? What offsets and widths did you go with in the front and back? Thanks, Scott |
hmmmm, i'm really trying to find something wrong with these.... Cant see much difference between these and the regular spacers.
Also, the ones at the bottom are spacers, not 'adapters'. |
These look great, maybe now I can mount my American Racing Torq thrust wheels on one of my cars....cool, good find

Just be aware that if you want to run in performance driving events, changing the Porsche bolt pattern with adapters is prohibited by the rules of many race organizations. In PCA Zone 8, you could not even autox with those adapters.

Adapters for 130mm to brand x are no different than adapters for 130mm to 130mm where safety is concerned. The stock Porsche configuration uses spacers and long studs, that is the distiction. 5 lug nuts and studs/wheel for spacers vs 10/wheel for adapters.
I have adapters that went the other direction, from 5x4.5 to 5x130mm, so I could run Fuchs on a different vehicle. Adapters are a PITA (changing a flat using the non-Porsche spare) but the only alternative is to re-drill your hubs for the new pattern. I didn't want to do that! |
So, to double-check my math with people that have put later model rims (964, 993) on earlier model Carrera and SC cars, I see the following specs listed for Fuch wheels:
size: 8x16 offset: 10.6mm (911) - front size: 9x16 offset: 15.0mm (911) - rear Since the adapters are 31mm thick, it looks like I would need to order rims in the following sizes: size: 8x17 offset: ~42mm - front size: 9x17 offset: ~46mm - rear Does this look correct? I don't want to have to roll any fenders or have any rubbing issues so if anyone has any recommended adjustments to the numbers above, I would appreciate it. It looks like the front I have a little room to play with because the 951 8x16 Fuch will fit up there and that has a 23.3mm offset. Thanks, Scott |

Scott, Thanks for the link. I've been looking for these for a long time and just ordered a set 5 mins. ago. Great price too! Thanks, Joe 74 911 w/ 86 3.2 |
Tom's statement above is the only factor to really weigh in on this in reality. Porsche's 14mm bolts on a 130mm circle is/was overkill, but that's so much nicer than the opposite with Mustangs running on 4 12mm studs.
PCA will not allow you to switch bolt patterns. I guess that's unless your upgrading a 914 to another "superior" Porsche bolt pattern. I don't know how the 356's keep their wheels from just falling off!!!!! Oh well, that's the rule book. |
