Best looking 911 stereo?
I hate the modern units these days. They just don't look right in an 80's 911.
Show me some picks and give me some advice. I'm looking for a mid range unit Thanks |
We install lots of these. All the features you need. No disco face design. Blaupunkt was the OEM for Porsche. Only $129 and works great for 911's. Blaupunkt San Diego AM FM CD MP3 iPod Aux input and cool little remote so you don't have to reach over for radio functions, includes mute function.

I too have been looking and theres not much you can do. I am getting ready to place a vintage 80s blaupunkt in the dash that has been modified to accept a I pod port and a small amp next to it. The radio will not be operation as I have rigged the volume on the radio to adjust the volume of the ipod. The radio is gutted except for a light. Looks good and you cant tell.

IMHO, the silver face on the Blau above is too much bling. I would go for one with a black face like this Alpine 9870...

I am working on a diagram on how to convert a vintage radio to Ipod Port etc.
Check back in an hour or so. Hopefully this helps. |

Ok guys, sorry for the crude drawing however I think you can get the idea. It works great and gives a nice vintage look. Any questions let me know. Some dials can be different so your going to have to do a little creative testing to figure out which lead is the right lead. Most of the Blaupunkts ive seen are pretty straight forward. It is a cool rewarding little project too. I will work on another one and take some good pictures of the entire process for you.

I seem to remember a post about a company that made repro/rebuilt units that match the original units?
Edit: Lots of info here... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/400922-radio.html?highlight=stereo |
This is a nice small cheap am that you can screw into the body of the radio.
All you really need is 2 channels unless you want to get all crazy and drop a thumping sound system into the 911. This amp is really all the power you need for 4 911 sized speakers. http://www.autotoys.com/x/product.php?productid=4593 there are a bunch of other small ones that are 4 inches wide by 1-2 inches high perfect fit and you cant even see them from below the ash tray! :) |
This may be a model that is NLA but the Blau Toronto was a very nice unit that I got years ago:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208750982.gif Has everything you needed for a good system. I have 4 preamps coming out into an amp and also have an Aux input that I play a satellite radio off of. Installed in a 911, it looks factory. |

I've got an original Becker Mexico waiting to go in to my '76. These chrome-framed 'pinstripe' Mexicos were actually produced from the late '60s all the way through to the early '80s, with only very subtle changes over that period. My head unit was actually manufactured in '79-80: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1200955983.jpg It's been fitted with a 3.5mm jack which allows you to plug in anything with a headphone jack (portable CD player/MP3 player/iPod etc...): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1200956087.jpg I think the final year of production for these was 1982. Another option: The Blaupunkt GTA series of in-car amplifiers have a Direct Aux input which allows you to connect an iPod etc directly to the amp - you don't even need a head unit! This way you could have an original cassette head unit in the dash, but have your iPod driving the tunes via the amp hidden beneath the seat ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1200956350.jpg Links: Blaupunkt GTA 280 Blaupunkt GTA 480 |

depends on what year i think. Here is a few of my collection the Bremen is from a 993 and has a Porsche key card nice for 89-95 cars i think. The Grand Prix is my favorite 80s model it would look good in a 76-89 car. The monza for 73 models and the blau 12 ch CB oh well :D http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208766107.jpg

I agree, I think the Grand Prix would look best in your year.

Here are some pics of the setup I have in my RSR "Tribute".
It's a Sony CDX-M630 CD Receiver (55wtsX4) with an 80Gb iPod hooked up via the aux input. Control is via a small remote (or the flip-down panel) and the unit's faceplate is dark unless you make a change in input source/radio station/CD track. Having RS door panels, I went with tweeters on the dash, a Moch under the dash speaker enclosure, a clover rear shelf w/ 4X10s and a small self powered Subaru (Panasonic) subwoofer under the passenger seat. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795359.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795375.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795387.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795399.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795414.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1208795429.jpg |
