well, i was calling around for prices for the 6 ignition wires for my 83 sc.
I just need the original. They quoted me $170 for the 3 on the left side of the engine and another $210 for the 3 on the right side of the engine. Does this sound about right? thanks ------------------ 83 sc euro cab |

Only if you use the $23.00 apiece Bosch plugs with them.

Pelican and any number of other suppliers can hook you up for one quarter to one half that number. Think of your Porsche dealer as a supplier of last resort, for those little oddball fittings and parts that you just can't get anywhere else.

It sounds like you haven't been keeping up here or searching old threads! Super Jim replaced his wires with 7 mm Hypalon wire and crimp-on ends from a Mercedes dealer for a total cost under $30, I believe! If your Beru connectors are still good (check resistance with digital multimeter -- 3-4000 Ohms) you could do the same!

No doubt about it, the shielded OEM wire set as made by Beru is pricey. I lucked out at my friendly, local dealer and got a genuine set at a nice discount. Sometimes if you get down on your hands and knees, cry and grovel, you can cop a deal
![]() BTW...when I checked the old set with my Fluke DMM, I was astonished to find marginal to bad readings in several wires/caps. It's amazing the motor ran as strong as it did! I think it was only a matter of time before it would have started to miss-fire, or fail to start entirely. ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |

I really enjoyed my wire rebuild experience, after John Walker turned me on to the Mercedes info. You see, the Mercedes dealership is the only place you will find the screw tips that go on the spark plug end, enabling the wire to screw onto the Beru connector. Once found, I was amazed and delighted with the quality of those little parts and their double-crimp attachment method.
Here's what I'd do. I'd find some excellent copper-core non-resistor 7mm wire. This can be found for $0.50 per foot. Don't pay more than $1.50 per foot, for sure, and I would not pay more than $1.00. cut it into sex lengths, (perhaps just a little too long), and go down the the Mercedes dealership. I'll be they would sell them to you and even use theri special tools to accomplish the double-crimp. Then it would be just a matter of putting the distributor cap ends, and the Beru (spark plug) ends on the wire. They screw on and off. Test them with an Ohm meter They should be 1000 ohm, and 3000-4000 ohm respectively. Dist cap ends are maybe $5, spark plugs ends are closer to $25. I think the down side to SS braid socks over ignition wires is greater than the benefits. ------------------ '83 SC |

I made my set from parts purchased at a local European auto parts store. Here are some part numbers:
Screw connectors - 000 159 14 38 (I crimped w/ a cable crimpers) Boots - 122 905 449A Beru connector (plug side) - 911 602 315 00 Beru connector (cap side) - 122 035 281 That with some bulk cable, I used Packard, will save you some money and make a good wire set. ------------------ Rob Fix '78 SC Targa |

You can get bulk 7mm wires from Napa. The brand is Belden and its made here in the US and they come in a variety of lengths. The one I recently got was a 25 ft. spool which was more than enough for all 6 with leftovers too. The NAPA part number is 734710, they are metallic cores and made by Federal Mogul. Total cost: $13.50 with tax!
