I don't think anyone has ever done one quite like the Ragamuffin.

It is an M&K special. This was one of the first of the mufflers that Ben made that would fit behind early bumpers. I built the megaphones and sent them to him to be fitted. It was a 2-in-2 out on a 2.2 S motor and it screamed (literally). I had a lot of fun with that set up. And I again thank Ben for playing along and doing a "special."

Gert-

Those headers are made by Pete Weber of Quiet Horsepower.
The "megaphones" in the system are Phase 9 mufflers, "the product of hours of engineering by automotive designer and engineer William Beekhius; hours of dynamometer testing by Porsche engine specialist Jerry Woods, and final design, fabrication, and packaging by Pete Weber." Combined with the crosschamber cannister, the system is capable of quieting 911 race engines to 87-95db in order to pass sound regs at tracks like Laguna Seca, without too much power loss.

I ran one of these systems on my 3.4 race motor in my '73RS-look and simply took off the crosschamber, adding some straight pipe extensions, for tracks where sound is not an issue, then put the crosschamber back on for street driving, or to register less than 92db at Laguna Seca and our local venue, Qualcomm stadium, which also has a 92db @ 50' limit.

I also used a single Phase 9 conical muffler in the exhaust on my 4-cylinder, 1600cc engine in my Formula Ford to quiet it to meet sound regs efficiently.

The "theory" behind my megaphones was pure folly. Porsche used a megaphone with the cookie cutter insert on many a race car and there have been many discussions as to why. One even suggested that the cookie cutter was there only to keep the pipe open in the event of a shunt. At that point, I laughed every time I saw my own creation as I do with a lot of my stuff.

the "megaphones" his red arrow points to are known as converging-diverging cones -- they are reknowned for being the only early type of noise abatement design ("muffler") that does not reduce hp at all.

first mention of them I've seen is in a book by a Brit. on Design of Exhaust Systems, IIRC it was published in the early 1950s.

They surely work by wave cancellation effects.

Thanks Tom, BTW did you feel any difference between straight pipes and the crosschamber?

Yeah--mostly in the ears! There was slightly better breathing with the open pipes, and I was running carbs set kinda rich on that motor, so I think the power picked up a little when it leaned out a bit, with less backpressure.
