Question Electrical System Short

I have the pleasure of owning a 86 911 Cab that is testing my metal for owning an older Porsche. It appears that I have a electrical short occuring somplace yet to be discovered by the dealership and two auto electrical service shops. Has anyone experienced the seatbelt indicator light flashing on intermitently which coincides with a significant reduction in the audio speaker output? Even when the stereo system is turned off, I experience the seatbelt light coming on intermitently.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

this happens when the voltage regulator allows an overcharge condition. 17V is not uncommon. do you smell sulphur occasionally? (not from following a ricer). have you noticed your headlights going dim/bright? usually requires replacing the alternator/regulator unit. have the charging system checked. just remember, it doesn't do it all the time.

Thumbs up

John Walker's reply is right on! My '86 Targa
had exactly the same symptoms--lights getting
much brighter and then dimming--seat belt light coming on at odd times. I checked and was getting almost 18v at times. Had to have the alternator/regulator repaired.
