Failed Emissions - Cat?

Hi all. My '99 996 seems to be running very well now so I took it to get a sniff test only to fail due to the HC being a tad bit higher than the limit, everything else was within spec. The previous engine was smoking a lot and spewing a lot of unburned oil to the cats. The tech said to drive the car at high speeds for about 100 miles and retake the test, which is what I shouldve done in the first place instead of taking the test prematurely. Do you guys pretty much concur that the "gunk" in the cats can be burned out eventually over the course of long drives? Thanks!
