Post Very "mushy" steering at Highway speeds

Ok here's the deal...
73 911E
Front end seems very light and very "mushy"
at highway speeds. If I give it a little Wiggle (left right) at 50mph or over, the front seems to sway a lot. Also the car is
quite prone to crosswinds at the same speeds.

My question is, what should I look for or address first?
Shocks? I know they could use replacing
Tie Rods? Should I consider going to turbo tie Rods?
Is it worth it to lower the front (and rear if necessary?)
I have driven many later models (78 and up) that seem to be rock steady at such speeds.

Any and all recommendations are welcome. I would like to do some of the work myself, but would gladly consider taking it to my mechanic for the work.

Thanks in advance.

When did you last get it aligned?

Drive the car like you normally do for fifteen minutes or more. Stop, get out, push the front end down as much as you can. Does it bounce? If so, replace shocks. Got this from one of the "techs" from Bilstein.

It seems to me, even if your car passes this test, the front shocks may still need to be replaced.

Get an alignment from a reputable Porsche shop. They will tell you if anything else is out of the ordinary (tie-rods, bearings, ball joints etc.)

other than the obvious, tires need to be considered. R rated tires are the worst. ZR are the best. among other things, the sidewall stiffness is night and day between the two. R tires cause floating as you described, and can cause loss of control in a quick, accident avoidance situation.

Actually I am running on Dunlop D-60A2's
Which are H rated.
I have 185-60-15's on front
and 205-60-15's on the rear.

Alignment is definately needed. Shocks are
moderate and I think I really need the new tie rods

I experience the same in my '85 Carrera. I honestly believe its due to the lift the car develops at speed. (I think it's about 300+ pounds of lift being developed)
My gut reaction is that if you had a turbo tail and front spoiler, that's the cure. Those tails on the deck lid are there for more than just show.

jlex.

H rated tires aren't any better than Rs. get some tires with a stiff sidewall.
