Front end play
 

I am trying to track down play in the front end. Shaking the tire with the car on the ground, I can feel some play. Jacking the car up and checking the tie rods and ball joint and it all seems fine. The front wheel bearings were recently adjusted in an attempting to track down the play. What else should I look at?

Be just a little more systematic and you'll find it. It sounds like you can feel the play. Do the tie rods move when you test the play? If not, you know the problem is out on the wheel. Probably a wheel bearing still a little loose.

If you can get it to move, see what's moving and what's not. You'll find it. There should be nothing loose.

If the wheel has play in all rotational positions, I would think about looking into the wheel bearings. A small amount (VERY little) of wheel bearing play when the wheel is not loaded..ie: off the ground...is normal.

If it only has play when you shake it left to right, and not top to bottom, I would look more closely at the tie-rods. I think a bad ball joint will produce more of a knocking sound when driving over bumps and would have to be very loose to produce discerable play when shaking the wheel.
