My 2.7S was not factory fitted with an external oil cooler at the front.
Has anyone tried fitting a normal matrix type oil cooler behind the engine cover grill similar to the a/c? I is a lot easier to plumb in & the engine fan will suck air through it. Only problem I can see, is it will heat up the engine bay & consequently be of no benefit. Any thoughts. The other option was a front mounted cooler with vents in the front spoiler with ducting similar to Jack Olsen's plans. This is obviously harder to plumb in & probably not needed as my engine puts out a modest 165-175hp depending on who's produced the stats. Thanks in advance for all your input, Jon '76 2.7S Targa |

Talk to Jack Olsen. He has 2 or 3 oil coolers in his 911 now, all in various places. Search the archives and you will find many postings with regard to his "quest for cool"

Hey Nick - -
Is there any truth to the rumor the Jack is contemplating adding a fourth cooler in his quest for cool; this one with five foot flex lines that his passenger du jour will be required to hold out the side window in the slipstream at speeds in excess of 60 mph? ![]() Chuck |

Passenger? My car generates much too much heat for a passenger. I'm going to use the passenger-side seat rail mounts to hold a fourth cooler, which will get air drawn through it when I open the sunroof and the smuggler's trunk simultaneously.
On race day, I have a little monkey trained to dangle from the roll bar and spritz the cooler with a water bottle. I think it will work. ![]() ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

Seriously, though, Jon, if you put the cooler where the condenser went, you'll compound two different problems. One, you'll be heating up the engine by pre-heating the air that's supposed to cool it. Two, you'll be adding weight in the rear of the car, where you want it the least.
A Carrera cooler is the way to go, with a fan if you do a lot of stop-and-go driving. The expensive part isn't really the lines to mount it up front (you can use aeropuip stainless steel wrapped lines), it's the changes to the lines in the back and the addition of a thermostat. If you use all Porsche components, especially, it can get pricey. Warren Hall's setup might be something to emulate. I believe he uses an aftermarket cooler and thermostat, along with big, fat AN-16 lines. ------------------ Jack Olsen 1973 911 T (3.6) sunroof coupe jackolsen@mediaone.net |

If you want a Carerra cooler, I would really consider buying one from Pelican right now. They are on sale new for what a decent used usually sells for.
