Question Oil line clamp won't tighten

I am a little concerned, I replaced the oil line that goes from my oil tank to the engine mounted cooler. When I try to tighten the hose clamp it pulls the line off the mounting flange. It is on now but not tight. The car is a 77 with 2.7. How tight is this clamp supposed to be?

Shawn;Does the line fit tight over the fitting? It sounds to me like the hose clamp isn't on far enough and when you try to tighten the clamp it only catches the edge off the pipe under it and squeezes itself off.Try pushing the hose on all the way and then put the clamp about 1/4 inch from the end and tighten it firmly. You really don't want this hose to come off.I don't know if this is right but I usually tighten hose clamp until I can feel the rubber slightly pushing thru the the slotted holes in the band.Hope this helps

It is a new hose and it goes on over the threaded part perfect. The threaded part is only less than 1" long, then it can't go any further. I don't remember there being any other piece as an adapter on my old one.

I DO NOT want this to come off! That would suck.

Thanks, any more ideas?

Shawn,

Is your oil cooler or oil tank a replacement from an earlier car? All '73 and later 'S' hoses are intended to be fitted over barb (slip-fit) ends at both cooler and tank!

It sounds like you need a '71-style supply line.

Is the 'threaded end' at the cooler or the tank?

A photo series would be helpful here. This could be a costly mistake, don't risk it.

Shawn are you talking about the soft rubber line or the harder high preasure line.On my 2.7 the bigger soft line goes from the aft side of the tank to the engine oil cooler, neither the tank or the cooler have any "threads" on them where this line hooks up.The other smaller harder line runs from the forward side of the oil tank and then hooks up to a rigid line that then runs around the engine to the drivers fwd side of the engine, this harder high preasure line has threaded fittings on both ends.Is it possible that you might be trying to connect your soft line to the wrong location? There should be two fittings on your tank, one threaded and one not threaded.

Thanks, I thought it was the original cooler, the threaded part is at the cooler end where it won't stay on. The confusing part is that this is the exact line that came off and it help, even the clamp is the same????

I will try to post pics because like you said it would be very expensive so I want to make sure it is right.

you're asking for disaster using lines like that. the early line was threaded on both ends, the late one was slip on both ends. you have a mix and match. either get a later cooler or an earlier tank. be safe.
