Is it necessary?
What is it's intended purpose?

Yes, it is fundamental - it keeps the hot air away from the top of the engine... You might be able to not have it in a race car, but I would never consider not having it on my car. Others might have another view...

Very necessary. Engine won't cool without it.

Which bits of tin are we specifically referring to though? The tin in the engine bay which surrounds the engine, or the bits of tin which fit between the cylindar barrels which channel the air between them?
I just want to clarify because I'm very interested to hear what people's thoughts are specifically about the tin which surrounds the engine (as apposed to the stuff between the barrels). I'm planning on fitting SSI's the summer and so will be left with a hole through the tin at the rear of the car which the old blower tube will be removed from - I'm just wondering if it's worth covering that hole up. Also, I was planning on just cutting the tin on either side of the engine to allow the hoses from the shroud to pass under to the SSI's. This will probably leave a few gaps in the tin between the top of the engine and bottom, and so I'm wondering if I should fork out for the proper earlier car tin which has the correct holes for the hoses cut in. May these gaps and holes won't be big enough to make much of a difference (?).

stuff between barrels forces more air to the head area and not just going around the bottom of the cylinders.
the parts around the engine - needed for cooling otherwise you have close coupled recirculation and the motor will run to hot - also the tin keeps the fan from sucking up all sort of dirt/dust off the road and plating it out over the top of your engine. |

I've made small pieces to cover up holes in mine - paint satin black Wurth or there's a Krylon that is supposed to match also.
I've covered anything bigger than a finger... velocity will increase thru a small hole so there can be more flow than you think. The factory used FG "tin" to save wt. on some cars - several guys have that for sale in amber & maybe other colors, CF, etc. |
