They started actually making SCs in 1977 (look at the production date sticker on early SCs, you'll see they were produced in late '77), but they were sold as Model Year 1978 cars.

Many of the earlier cars (3 litre Carrera's) had "SC" on the serial number plate in the trunk. They weren't actually SC's until model year 1978.

I have one of these cars. The serial number indicates the car was manufactured in 1978 (9118300758), but the German paperwork has it listed as registered in1977 as a 911SC - Gave me a lot of problems when I imported the car to Sweden. The person who did the import test was not sure what to register the car as, but in the end went after the German paperwork...

Could that mean I have a Carrera 3 engine in my car? What is a 638 2707

That's an engine for a ROW 911SC, built for the 1978 model year. Not a Carrera 3.0 engine but, frankly there are not a lot of significant differences between the two, at least as far as the performance goes.

Some countries title the car using the model year, some use the year it was produced and a few use the year it was first sold.

My '78 RoW SC (9118300015) was delivered in Sept. '77. I have the original German owners manual with the guy's name and address!

Some jurisdiction may issue title as a certain year (in your case, probably an error), but your car is still a regular Model Year 1978 911SC.
