Question -- Original headlights for 1983 SC?
Greetings.
I have a large box of parts that came with my 1983 SC, including what look to be a set of headlights, wondering if they are the originals. They are made by Wagner and also come with a set of painted trim rings which match my exterior paint. My car currently has a set of H4 Bosch headlights with painted trim rings installed. A few questions: Were H4 headlights available on SCs? If not, are these headlights H1s? I appreciate any assistance. Thanks, Rob

Those are the originals. They make the car look better IMO.

post a picture of these "other" lights please.
H1's look very similar to H4's- the main visual difference is the H1's have 4 screws on the face where H4s have only 2

In the US, the SC had 'Sugar Scoops' with Wagner, Sylvania or... sealed beam headlights.
They had a fat trim ring painted body color. The H4's were on Euro cars with a thinner trim ring, usually body color also. They had a removable bulb - were not sealed beam. Sounds like the PO took off the sugar scoops and installed H4's. H1's were not stock on SCs in Europe... maybe on earlier cars? Maybe for racing? They have 2 separate reflectors inside each housing, one for High, one for Low beams. They are no longer made and are expensive. |

Here are the pics of the lights. It seems both are made by Hella -- imprinted into the chrome ring -- but one light is a Sylvania, the other is a Wagner. Both lights say "sealed beam" on the face. Both are in perfect condition with no cracks.
I've also included pics of one of the bezels. Thoughts? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

That's a stock US sealed beam headlight assembly, with the trim ring that many people call "sugar scoops." Standard on 911's from way back, up through the mid-eighties.
If you have H4 lights on your 911, they are a much better light than what the car came with. No US 911 came with them stock. The H1 lights were available on much older 911s in Europe. JR |

BTW, you can get H4's that will fit in the 'sugar scoop' headlight. From various mfgs. Bosch, Hella, Cibie...
They are NOT sealed beam; they have a separate bulb that inserts into the back of the reflector. Mount the same, uses same wire plug. No-brainer. Sort of a stealth H4. Light pattern is about as good as the very expensive Euro H4's. Those Wagner, Sylvania were originally about 4 bucks each. Poor light coverage. |

You're kidding. Really?
I did a quick search for a comparable pic w/US lights - no luck. You have got to be one of the very few. I think it's one of the worst things P had to do in the name of silly compliance.
