Another Newbie who needs a little help! (w/pics)

Hey all, First off I want to say thanks to Wayne for making this site possible. I have been lurking around here for awhile and I love this site. So much useful info. Everytime I get on the computer this is the first place I go.

Now about my car...I bought her last year about this time, she's my first but hopefully not my last. She's an '82 SC Targa with about 72k miles on her. I'll post the pictures when I stop talking.

After I bought her I got the valves adjusted and fixed a tranny leak. But after I got the car back it had a hunting idle, so I took it back to mechanic and he said he took care of it. It ran fine all summer till about mid october when the idle starting hunting again. I didn't have time to take it back to the shop so I just lived with it for the rest of the year. This past weekend me and my mechanic friend (not the guy I took it to in the first place) were looking into the idle. After it warms up it will hunt...(the decel valve was capped off when I bought it)....We hooked the decel valve back up and it wouldn't hunt anymore but it had a high idle. We adjusted the idle control valve and it was better till we reved the engine and then it went back to the high idle again. We checked for vacuum leaks and we couldn't find any but when you take off the oil cap the car idles great at 1000rpms. Since the idle doesn't hunt when the decel valve in hooked up I would think that the mixture should be alright.

I'm still learning about this car but I hate driving it with the hunting idle. I don't know if anyone has had the same problem but if you could give some advice or recommend a good mechanic for me to take it to I would greatly appreciate it. I took it to the garaj last summer.

Ok now what most of you have been looking for. Here's my baby

Hunting idle on my SC required a new O2 sensor.

Nice car and welcome...
I find myself here soon after turning on the computer as well!
Off your topic, what wheels are those?

Is hunting idle and surging idle the same. I'm no expert but I had heard a too rich mix could cause this. I sometimes get that same problem and my mech said you sometimes have to adjust seasonally. Crazy right?

its because you have a turbo tail on a narrow body car.

J/K,.. how much is it surging? 1-2-3 hundred rpms? or? and how fast does it cycle?

its surges between about 200rpms to 1300rpms about every 3-4 secs....but when I hooked the decel valve back in there is no surge at all just a high idle. thats what makes me think it cant be the mixture, but i havent tried it yet so i cant say for sure

Bill they are ROH wheels....they came with the car and i like them, but i want to get a porsche center cap for them sometime.

thanks for the posts guys!...i have to check into the mixture and 02 sensor, but keep them coming.

Geoff
