4 years from now GT3 or Cayman S
I always try and look ahead to the next Porsche and I'm expecting that in about 4 years I will want to replace the 993 with a newer car to be used mainly for fun in autocross and low key DE events by the wife and myself.
I really like the Cayman S after having driven several. However, I would imagine that when the time comes the used prices for 996 based GT3's and Cayman S's would overlap somewhat. So which to choose? I already have a good idea but would like to hear what you all think.....

I agree with Kevin -- I can't imagine a 996 GT3 and used Cayman being in the same price bracket.

When you consider how trick a GT3 is mechanically, and the relatively low production numbers, I suspect a Cayman will be half the price of a GT3, four years from now. The GT2s and 3s are the first really special, sports purpose cars Porsche has bothered to import to the US. It would be nice to think that a 996 GT3 is going to get more affordable, but I don't think they have too much further to go down. A nice low mile 993 is still $40K!

In 4 years, a 2006 Cayman S will cost a small fraction of what a 2004 or 2005 GT3 will cost, imho.
I agree that they're both great cars to drive though...

I think 996 GT3's are about as low as they will be for a bit... I say buy them now before the prices start to climb up and aup again.

IMO Caymen prices will fall as early Boxster and 996 prices did and for the same reason. By then the S will sport the GT3 dry-sump 3.8 engine and a GT2 Caymen will be just announced.
GT3s are always a bargain compared to the alternative (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston) so it is really pedantic to focus on what year or variation between GT3s. Find the one you want, buy it and enjoy. Want track? Buy a MK1 Sport, strip it and enjoy. Want a daily driver? Buy a MK2 or 997 and enjoy.

I wouldn't worry about prices "going up" in them; there is no catalyst to drive up prices. There is a steady supply of GT3 997 models and if anything they will keep dropping the more the 997's keep looking so beautiful and the 996's keep looking worse and worse. To answer your question, in 4 years a 3 year Cayman will cost as much as a 996 GT3. I would go with the titanium engine GT3! |

what? there's no way they're gonna over lap, New cayman compared to 2004 or 05 gt3 maybe.
Does someone really believe that the 996 gt3 will be in the low thirties high twenties in 2012? |

The depreciation curves on these cars seem to bottom out in 15 to 20 years or so. I don't know if I think the GT3 is bottomed out? Doesn't mean the curve is steep, but I think they keep dropping.
However, I cannot imagine a time when the value curve will intersect that of a Cayman. That seems just plain out of the question. GT3s kick ass. I'd like one, one day. They seem like a good car to plan to buy, care for meticulously and hold. Doug

Guys I must be missing something. The prices already overlap if you match current GT3 pricing against new well optioned Caymans.......
Here's a 2004 GT3 with a buy it now price of $69,981. Beautiful looking car with 13,700 miles My thought was that a car like this 2004 still has to depreciate over the next 4 years, maybe not a lot, perhaps the upper $50's with 20k more miles or so but I can't really believe that it's already bottomed out? I mean GT3's are being built. I understand they are not the 996 based cars that some astute Porschephiles prefer but they are being built. In four years newer Caymans, let's say 2010 models, will be in the $60K's I would guess. So tell me do you really think I'm off on this? I had always assumed the response would be GT3 but I had anticipated that my idea was sound. If It's not I might have to ask the following question. Do I sell my pristine '88 930S with 46K miles ASAP to move into a GT3?.......

the way you worded it it sounded like you were gonna compare a 2008 cayman to a 2004 or 5 gt3.
in 2012 a 60k 2008 cayman will be in the high 20s I think in 2012 the US 996 gt3s will be in the ????? high 50? no I wouldn't sell an 88 s for a 996 gt3, but if you drive one and can get over the looks of it you'd really feel like doing anything to get into one. that's just me though Last edited by jbrinkley; 02-28-2008 at 09:51 AM.. |
