Pulled key out, car keeps running but radio goes off?? Magic?
I turned off the ignition ,pulled the key and the car keeps running but the radio goes off??Just got my 85 911 on the road after extensive front end work and its a blast. Those poly bronze bushings sure are sweet. Squeeks are gone. The car is having so much fun it doesnt want to stop? I will eventually run out of gas or fall asleep though. Anyone experience this before?? thanks Doug

Very common, this is a broken ignition switch. There's a chapter on this in my book. Jiggle the key for a while and it will go off, or simply disconnect the coil or fuel pump fuse (or pull the DME relay under the passenger seat). I recommend you fix this right away, as it can cause problems.

I replaced the ignition switch barrel with a new one from the dealer and the darn thing still wont shut off. When you stop the car by pulling the relay, the battery and oil lights stay on on the dash. Disconnect the battery and they go off and reconnect the battery and they dont go back on until you turn the key again.( I dont know if that is some sort of clue as im not very good with electrical stuff.) I had the same problem with my 89. Tired new switch, new DME, new alternator to no avail. In the end I bypassed the factory alarm and wired in a seperate relay to trigger power to the DME Relay when the key hit the ON position and shut it off when the key went off the ON.
I believe that the 85's had a different alarm and wiring scheme. I had a post on this with a lot of suggestions in it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/367278-engine-will-not-turn-off.html As I recall the 85's had a slightly different wiring for both the alarm and alternator. There was an external diode between the ignition and the alternator that if failed could potentially cause power to flow the wrong way. |
I just took the car for a drive and discovered that while driving and the key is turned off the speedo and the radio shut down, all other guages continue to work. Any thoughts?
