Post 911SC Exhaust Change

After driving my 79 911SC for 198,000 miles and 18 years, my exchangers are finally leaking. I want this changeout to last just as long. I've been told to go with GHL exchangers and muffler. However, in talking with GHL they state they don't make exchangers for anything earlier than 1984 and recommend SSI exchangers and their muffler (about $800 for the muffler). Has anyone used this SSI/GHL combination and how did they work together? Are their advantages to dual vs single exhaust and 3" vs 4" other than looks? If anyone went with dual, how did you modify your valance? Input will be appreciated before I drop nearly three grand on an exhaust system.

I used a pre-74 exhaust and OEM single outlet muffler. I picked it up for about $400. Add an additional $180 or so for oil lines. Bruce Anderson states this is the best, most cost effective, improvement to the 3.0. I agree. The seat of the pants dyno showed a increase in HP and others tote 15-20 horses.

Three grand for an exhaust is too much. The duel outlet is also much louder, but does look cool. For three grand I pick up some 3.2 piston/cylinders and the pre-74 exhaust. The most bang for your buck. Just my .02.

Thumbs up

PBS911, thanks for the pre-74 option. I had not even considered that. I'm definitely not into spending money I don't have to.

Keep in mind that if you go to a pre 74 exhaust, you will no longer have a cat. If you live in a place with smog checks, if will probably fail the visual inspection portion of a smog check.

You will need to hang on to your existing leaky system and reinstall it for smog checks ever year or 2.

Kits including the brand new, stainless steel SSI heat exchangers and a decent muffler, including oil lines, can be had for $1300-$1500. Used, pre-74 units are harder to find but certainly less expensive. And yes, you should consider keeping the old set just in case.
