What model of 911 is it. There are many different shifters that were put into the cars over the years. I would not go the oil route...it is too thin to provide long lasting lubrication. First thing I would do is check the bushings in the system to see if they are intact or excessivily worn. If they are ok disassemeble the shift linkage and use a good synthetic greese on all of the bushings and pivot points.

White lithium grease is what I used when I put new bushings in. Works great. You can find the stuff anywhere.

While moisture isn't usually plentiful around the shift housing, I've seen my share of corroded shift housings. White lithium grease is okay but isn't waterproof. Instead, I'd suggest a waterproof synthetic grease.
The creaking noise could also be an imminent sign the shift lever is about to depart. The lower part is epoxied onto the upper part. After 20+ years, the glue says adios and the upper lever/shift knob assy. parts company with the part that can't leave. Sherwood |
