Some weeks ago when Wayne was polling the membership as to what direction Pelican Parts should head, many of us told him we'd like to see a *printed* catalog. True.
I've been buying $tuff lately from Pelican, but also AJ-USA, who have been very good to deal with. With my last order, Marvin at AJ-USA included (free) a copy of their *excellent* catalog. Those of you who have a copy will know what I'm talking about. It is not just a colored picture book like Tweeks or Automotion, but contains much useful information like a factory parts book. The Pelican website is a great benefit for Porsche owners. I know we are all thankful for it, but I think you just can't beat a good, printed catalog. ------------------ Doug '81 SC Coupe (aka: "Blue Bomber") Canada West Region PCA members.home.net/zielke/911SC.htm |

I have to agree w/ the AJ catalog, it is a great reference, and I guess by leaving the prices out it is also timeless.
About the only way I can think of to beat a printed catalog is to make an online catalog like AJ's w/ the diagrams, and make all of the lables into links for the item with the details and prices. Printed catalogs do cost much more to produce, and would drive up prices. Yes I would like a Pelican catalog, but not at the expense of other services, such as this board. Maybe just catalogs for registered members?!? |

That's what this site is all about. It is developing as a technical resource. A great deal of work (expense) is involved in this kind of project and it's a wonderful site. We salute you, Wayne, and support you too.
On the other hand, a printed catalogue of some kind might be important. For me, it need not be packed with any technical info. I'd appreciate just a plain product list with prices, dated. Plain paper. Newsletter sort of thing. Perhaps with link addresses to more complete product or procedure descriptions on the site. Limit the mailing list to just the folks who have not quit visiting the site. ------------------ '83 SC |

Update: Physical catalogues do not suffer technical difficulties. I can reach the BBS (bookmarked), but not the Pelican Home site right now.

I have an AJ USA catalogue from many years ago. It is a work of art & I have kept it partly for that reason. I also got a separate price list, many years ago, from them for the catalogue. The idea of printing a catalogue without prices & printing a separate price list as prices change would be a cost saver. I'm not sure a printed catalogue from PP or other additional suppliers would be that cost effective. Most people can get on the web nowadays & PP advertises in enough places to attract people. Besides, all of us probably have a bunch of those beautiful catalogues we just use for references and that's it.

Catalogs are great, but expensive. Chuck Stoddard put out a great one also. Never seen one from Alan Johnson, probably close to being the same. I would rather have cheap prices that a fancy catalog. Service and price are better that getting hosed from a pretty book company.

Anyone got a weblink to AJ-USA? Sounds like a place that I have missed out on.

The webpage for AJ-USA is
http://www.ajusa.com I'd really like a catalog from Pelican...how about one of those "refund cost of catalog on order"? I'd pay for it, I know sooner or later I'd order something. That way at least when I'm just sitting around at work I have something to look at (no internet access at work). ------------------ Jeff 1976 911S |

Ummm.... It's a dot com, not catalogue place like LL Bean.
The technical articles cover it for me... If you want a catalogue print them out and put them in a binder for toilet reading. The computer is supposed to save paper, not create it... In theory anyway. ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

You can't do this with a printed catalog:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_oilsys_main.htm Scroll thru for a while - you'll see EVERY single oil seal used on the 911 listed there with pictures AND a diagram. Don't give up on the medium yet. When I'm done here, the paper catalog will look old hat... -Wayne |
