What is this orange strap I see on a lot of transmissions??

It is nylon coated cloth and bolted on the opposite side of the ground strap.

What are these durn things for? I've seen dozens of 'em...

HI RWebb
the yellow strap should be in a loop and should hold the clutch cable away from the throttle linkage, thay usually get damaged like the one in the photo when the box is removed and the clutch cable is not removed carefully from the strap and then end up like yours.

Part number

Located the part in PET Main Group 7; Hand Lever System -

It's only a listed part through the 77 models. I was unable to locate it on the 78 forward?

If you look in/at the 70 - 73; page 274, it's item 59; #999 706 009 80
If you look in/at the 74 - 77; page 182, it's item 60; #999 706 009 80

They are now gray colored; maybe Porsche decided since one noticed the strap anyway until they broke it, why bother with a bright color. Very few of the "things to remember" lists while dropping the engine/transmission mention releasing this strap.
Strap is important in keeping the clutch cable off the throttle bell crank mounted on the side of the transmission.

Thanks - that must be it then. Besides the year restriction and color change, Pelican also says it is a brake cable strap, not a clutch cable strap...

BUt now I know what to get!

The same strap is used to keep the parking brake (handbrake) cables clear of other moving parts such as halfshafts.
