Unhappy cooling fan rub

I have a problem with the cooling fan rubbing on the housing by the crankshaft pulley. When I took the belt off of the fan and was able to check the alternator bearings I noticed their was a moderate amount of play. What I was wondering, can the alternator bearings be adjusted to take up the play or do I need a new alternator.

sorry about the triple post

I just had my alternator rebuilt for around $125, and they installed new bearings and other items.

Ted,

Make sure you don't have a cracked fan housing first. I had a similar problem and it turned out to be two cracked blades on the fan housing itself.
