911 wiper blade waste product excess

don't know if this should be posted in this forum, but they ARE 911 blades. just bugs me to see all this packaging going into the trash (landfill) for a couple of flippin' wiper blades. gripe over.

I was thinking the same thing last week. What a waste. (pun intended)

At least I put the plastic stuff in the plastic recycle bin and the other in the paper, but still...

prob not the right forum... but I was talking to a friend just the other day about the organic food supermarkets here are starting to carry - nearly as much packing on 6 organic tomatoes as on your wiper blades!

Hey! We are in the packaging business, its all about packaging now. You should see some of the stuff where the package cost more than the product..

There is a very scary article on www.newsweek.com about the future when (not if) oil hits $200 per barrel. The more oil we waste overpackaging things like wiper blades, the sooner Newsweek's predictions will come true.

Rant over. Carry on.

Agreed, we waste to much.

Not just packaging, but also food. I can not believe the food people waste.

Unpackaging parts comprises a significant portion of Dr. Walker's day. Unpackaging the parts for an engine rebuild probably takes him as long as disassembling the engine. If you don't believe this, you should watch him disassemble an engine.

This is gonna get us bumped to OT, but an emerging trend here in the UK is to unpack your groceries at the supermarket checkout in protest at overpackaging - I mean fruit and veg, other stuff like that, not Corn Flakes etc. Loads of people doing it, led by a surprisingly influential ladies' group.

I bought some new wiper blades just before our recent Le Mans track day and thought exactly the same as you John, totally crazy amount of packaging for one blade and a few plastic clips.

I got pissed in the same way at the same product just last week. You can also just leave the packaging at the store - they are usually not enamored with this... but in Eugene a lot of them are resigned to it. Of course, they did not create the problem directly. We will probably ban plastic and maybe paper grocery bags here soon. Many use a permanent cloth bag for shopping - that too has become a profit center as there are thousands of different ones for sale now... even our local hardware store has one.

am I being naive thinking that when I put my recyclables in the blue bin, that this is being recycled? I always sort my trash, and wash out plastic, aluminum, glass containers before putting them in the blue bin. Am I doing all this work for nothing? Someone tell me that this stuff IS being recycled....

it is. ours goes to a mechanical sorter in Portland - dunno re Fresno

people from here have gone up and checked out the exact % that is recycled, etc.

BUT, better to reduce than recycle. No reason for all that crap on a set of wiper blades - you'd think the "green" Germans would be on top of that.

Packaging is done primarily to reduce pilferage, theft, it's crazy.

Hey guys, instead of *****in' about it all, why don't you do something about it? For instance, reuse the same water bottle for as long as possible (not read as long as you want to, b/c as lazy Americans, we quickly forget about the pedestal we were standing upon just the other day). Of course that would require you to drink water instead of that Coke that you want, but that type of thinking has gotten us into the predicament we are presently in. Recycle (b/c you aren't too busy... I'm in the military and find time to do it, and so can you), reduce by buying less of the things you think you need but really don't (you're gonna have to really open your mind on this one and stop thinking that I need to get off this pedestal you were once on, perhaps, but have forgotten about), and just stop eating so damn much. Missing a meal builds character... missing two builds even more. Oh, and stop parking in handicap parking spots when you don't rate to do so, not even "for a sec, bro." Hmmm, what else to rant about... let me think.

$13 apiece the packaging isn't cutting in Bobby Bosch's profits much.

Forums are for *****ing and moaning, especially in OT. This doesn't preclude being proactive.

RWebb, the collective "we" are doing it, and our "culture" has whispered into your ear so long that you are no longer listening. Chew on this fact... America comprises less than 10% of the world's population, but we consume more than 50% of the world's goods. If you think you are already doing all you can, that is just pride talking. Pride and nothing else... again, one of the factors contributing to the predicament we are ALL now in. All meaning what you do affects me, and vice versa... so wake up!!!
