Wheel question, Will this fits onto this?

Hi guys,
Just a simple question about the steel wheel and the hubcap.
Please see picture.
Will this hubcap fits on to this steel wheel?
I'm going retro on the 74 targa.
Thanks
Burint

No.

Not a good choice of wheels for what you want to do. Use a standard steel wheel.

JR.
I am planning to replace the spare tire with 195/60/15.
What's the different between the spare steel wheel and the standard steel wheel?
Thanks

Well, my first thought was that the wheel in your photo was a narrow wheel, but it may have a width of 5 1/2," which I suppose would work. Check to see if it has a J profile. If it does, you'll have a J stamped on the wheel where the size is listed. Something like 5 1/2J 15 H2.

Change the valve stem to a normal one. Check the offset to see if it suits the look you are after. The steel wheels had a different (larger) offset. I assume you have checked the caliper clearance.

Good luck,
JR

Not sure how those particular hub caps fit onto the wheel. If they're typical, they snap-fit onto the wheel via raised humps around the wheel center. I see none on the spare-type wheel. Regular road wheels should have the necessary hub cap mounting surface.

Yes, you'll have to get 'normal' steel wheels. Cap won't fit on the spare wheel.

Some normal steel wheels may not fit over your calipers. May need spacers at least.

I've seen some trick stuff done with the steel wheels on the 356's. They cut the center out of a standard Porsche 15" steel wheel and then weld a wider rim to it. I believe that they used a 15"x7" camaro wheel as the rim donor. With the old porsche hub caps it looked great. Old style with a decent width and profile tire.

Here's the pictures of wheels I have. Could this be the raised humps around the wheel center you mentioned? They have different manufacture date stamped, 73, 79, 83,84 and they all look the same.

Yes, the spare has the J profile 5 1/2J, 15 H2

Could anybody please help clarify with close up picture of the real steel wheel V.S. the spare one?

Many thanks to all of you.

It would be easier to figure out if someone had a pic of the back side of the hub cap. It appears there may be two hub cap types according to the posted wheel pics.

FWIW, here are two spare tires:

Early 15" spare w/full size tire (from my '69):

Late 15" spare w/collapsible tire (year unknown):

They both have the internal nubs for what appears to hold a hub cap (which I can't remember seeing on a 911), but maybe a "baby moon" type often seen on 356 chassis.

The picture is from Stoddard.
It shows 3 kinds of hubs. Two are for drum brake wheel and the no.3 is for disc brake 356,912.
