San Diego Area Coffee/drive 5/10
Hi all! I'll be arriving at the new digs on 4/30, and will be up to my eyeballs in movers, garage flooring installers, DirecTV installers, DSL/Phone hook-up, and who knows what else the next few days.
I'd like to set up a meeting on Saturday 5/10 for whoever is available; I want to meet the local group as soon as possible. Donald (Hester) had come up with the suggestion below, which sounds good to me. I'm not sure if I can spare the time on the El Cajon run as I'll still be unpacking and setting up shop, but I will need to know where the 100 octane is, or else I need to change out my chip. I'm going to add a twin plug setup (already have the holes!), but that will be later this year. I digress. Here's Donald's itinerary: Pomerado road exit on the south-side of Lake Hodges will be nice and close for him. From there, we can see how well he can hang on Highland Valley Road. I want to try cutting off on Camino Del Aguila to Starvation Mountain Road and then hooking back to Highland Valley Road. Check out that Camino Del Aguila on the Google satellite and bring some Dramamine! Highland Valley Road will take us to Ramona. We can grab some coffee there and either go back the way we came, go up to Julian and out through Cuyamaca, or take the 67 to El Cajon where I can show Ed Hughes the gas station that sells 100 octane race fuel at the pump so he can adjust the crappy-10% ethanol-laden-91 octane-oxygenated-California-summer blend-pump piss that we get here so Ruby can stomach it. We can always just do a meet & greet coffee, and plan a drive in the next couple of weeks. Who's in, and lets set the time/place.

Regarding the 100 octane stop in El Cajon: If it is th SoCo station on Magnolia Ave. it is 110 octane. Used to be 111 but the sticker recently changed. You can buy it w/ credit card and pump directly into your car. The other fuels there have to be purchased with corporate cards. Go figure!

This may be a little off topic but I've been thinking about rejetting the S&S carb on my Harley, bumping the timing up, and running E85. I just built the engine a few thousand miles ago with 10.5:1 domed pistons, stainless valves, race springs, and a programable ignition. The thing runs strong but I have to keep the timing close to the top or it pings. I know about E85's tendency to eat fuel lines and rust gas tanks but I think the extra bang that I'll be able to tune into the Harley will be worth it. Its either that or start pumping race fuel.

Well, I'm now officially back online.....so BUMP for the GTG next week.
Donald: Why do you want to run that crappy E85? Way less energy per gallon in that overly subsidized hogwash that makes all the tree huggers feel good. It's as bad as the warm and fuzzy feeling everyone would have driving electric cars....until all of the coal fired power plants fire up to meet the electrical demand, and we all choke to death.

Oh, I forgot a pre-moving van pic of Ruby in her new digs. I've got to get the garage in order so I can back her out....then she needs a bath after 1400 miles across the deserts....

Yeah, Ed, ethanol has a much lower energy content than gasoline but it is higher octane (i.e., it is much more resistant to auto-ignition under pressure and high temperature). My Harley is way over built for the fuel that I have available. As is, I can get the front wheel off the ground without riding the clutch. If I could advance the timing a little, the thing would really run strong. That's why I want to use the E85. For what works out to the same price as super even when you factor in the poor gas mileage, I get 115 octane race fuel. I would have an alcohol-burning street rod.
By the way, welcome to San Diego. That was some day today, huh?

Probably won't happen....lots of travel in June, and LeMans smack dab in the middle. But, I want to venture up that way soon!
Thanks! I didn't notice....riding herd on movers, delivery people, ATT, etc....just kidding, it was spectacular.

PCA-SDR is running an autox at Qualcomm stadium in the west lot that day. You guys should put that on your itinerary for before/after your drive and stop by. There will be 120+ local P-cars and their drivers there. C'ya, TT

Based on the number of boxes to unpack, stuff to hang and furniture to buy, I'd like to maybe get an early coffee in and a trip to see the autoX course for a bit. I'm more of a fan of track events, but since the Q stadium events seem pretty regular, may have to partake in some autox.

Yeah, I have to maintain a fax machine in my office for old folks who can't figure out how to scan and E-mail.
Why don't we meet up at the W. Via Rancho Parkway exit of the 15 in Escondido. There is a Shell gas station and strip mall right there. We can leave from there and go south one exit to Pomerado Road (east) and pick up Highland Valley Road. We can take Highland Valley Road to State Route 67 in Ramona and from there we can either cut right back to the 15 on Scripps Poway Parkway or go to the 8 in El Cajon. Even the long way shouldn't take more than an hour and the end of the ride will be the stadium. If we meet up at 8, we can stop for coffee and still be at the Stadium by 10.

Donald, I'm thinking a little earlier maybe? I've got tons of stuff to do. I've been at it 3 days now, and only starting to make a dent. I'm going to do some more tomorrow, then it's back to work mode this week, then back to move-in mode next weekend.
Let's go for coffee somewhere a bit further south and more convenient for others, then maybe a quick jaunt down to Q. I've had some PMs from locals, I'll make sure they know of this thread.

I can do early. Sunrise next Saturday is at 5:53. You tell me.
I picked our starting point in Escondido to make it more convenient for you (screw the "others"). You can drive down here for coffee and then we could go to Qualcomm but I gotta tell you, I live about three miles from there and that doesn't leave much room for Hester's weekly exercise. The city is not very much fun in a Porsche which is why I try to head out to the East County back-country when I can. If you just want to meet up at Qualcomm, we can do that. Let me know.
