Advice mounting Flags on 74'

Does anyone have some advice or "how-to's" on upgrading from single driver mirror to left and right flags on a 74'? I don't really care about having the electrical adjustment or the heaters hooked up. I just need some advice on mounting. The mirrors I intend to install are from an 82' I think.

I tried a search but may not be hitting the right words. If there are previous posts, please reply with any.

Thanks in advance,
Paul

It could be tricky without another 911 to work from for measurements. There is a reinforcing plate under the base, held on by pop rivets.

Here's a pic from another 911 we were working on about a year ago.

You probably already know it, but they are NOT mounted symmetrically. In other words, the passenger side location for the holes is not in the same position as the driver side location.

Instruction in the factory manual......

Paul,

Send me a reply to atd911@hotmail.com and will forward a copy of the instruction with some pictures. I did the same for my '78SC that had driverside mirror only some years ago.

Rusnak: I believe one of the first things I need is the backing plates you mentioned. Can these plates be scavanged by drilling out the rivets? Or, will I have to get new?

Jack: Good to hear from you. I did know that. I have a few other cars in the shop (82', etc...) but thanks for the reminder. I believe the drivers side flag will cover the existing holes left behind from the chrome mirrior.

I have gathered together a whale tail from a 75' ish, front spoiler with resessed fogs and lip, flag mirrors, and new(never installed) factory SC flares with rear extentions and SC rockers (future project). I am having the other parts painted to match car in a week or so. I can't wait to get the car up to the track and maybe have you give it a spin. The 3.0 works very well in such a light car.

Tony: Thank you very much. This is exactly what I looking for, someone who has "done it." I will get in touch with you.

Thanks TRE,

I need to replace the left mounting plate too, right?

TRE Cup 05-10-2008 12:59 PM

yes , you do need to mount one there , if the car did not originally come with electric flag mirrors

I did this to my car a few yrs ago b4 painting, bought and riveted the supporting brackets (it's a must)! I had the the pelicanite make a template for me by tracing the edge of the psg door, top of the window and the holes. I lined up the paper on the door, pin pricked the center of the circles he traced and used a marker to mark the center for drilling. drilled, filed and rustproofed. worked great.

found it in the garage, the on hole not punched out is for the wiring, which I did not use. good luck.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1210456032.jpg

Mirror mounting holes........

Paul,

Sent you an email with a copy of the instruction sheet. Don't forget to put a re-inforcing plate on the door. I did not use rivet, instead a double sided adhesive tape to keep the metal plate in place. Take pictures and keep us posted.

Thanks to all!!!! Excellent info.

Tony sent me a factory diagram of the mounting measurements and proceedures. Anyone else doing this should concider sending Tony a fresh Heineken in the mail. I know I did...

Just kidding, I only have empties right now but I will fly over and get them re-filled soon. :)

EDIT * I just printed and read the PDF, and answered this question.

Will the newly installed driver's flag mirror cover the existing holes from the factory 74' chrome mirror?

ANSWER * NO, must weld up old holes.

Thanks,
Paul

With all due respect, why go to flag mirrors? The original '74 mirrors are lighter and more unique. I've known more people who want to find a way to ditch the flags in favor of the 74 mirrors than vice-versa. Don't do it! Just my $.02

JP, I have over the months flip-flopped back and forth. The #1 factor is, I can't stand driving without a right side mirror. I know I can get a reproduction of the rectangle chrome for the right side but would still have to drill and mount. I guess it all boils down to the fact that I just like the look. My car is just a "plain Jane" 74' coupe NO sunroof. It's not a S or T and I just want to update the look. I'm not trying to create a missconception replica or anything just maybe a later model envy.

But, thanks to you... I now will be loosing sleep over it again. JK :)

P.S. I wouln't mind if this thread turned into a "pro/con" discussion on:

To upgrade to flags or just add a match for the passenger side.

On second thought, how about NO mirrors at all. To quote a line from the movie, The Great Race. The Italian driver at the start of the race said; "Never worry about what's behind you." As he broke off the rear view mirror.

Flags on a 74

I have flags on my 74 and the one on the passenger side will not mount straight
it will be at a slight angle.
Go with the origninal mirrors.... I am going to switch back

OK, this is new one. What do you mean straight? Will it not be hoizontal with the ground? Will it dip or point up? How does my door differ from later years?
