Muffler flange question on a '70 911 S

Hi all, I am installing 2 O2 sensor bungs on the muffler inlets (as per john_cramer's LM-1 installation thread) for an LM-1 air-fuel sensor with an LC-1 so I can monitor left and right banks at the same time. My muffler is stainless but the flanges and inlets are not (so it appears). I know the muffler was replaced on 5/5/1975 (53532 miles) by the OO and the car now has 120000 miles. The muffler looks pretty good but the flanges are pretty rusty. I do have SSIs as well. Here is a close-up of the left flange:

I need to have the bungs welded on but before I do, I wanted to check here to get opinions on whether I should replace the muffler now (before incurring the bung installation expense). Can these flanges be used as they are (I do have new gaskets and bolts/nuts) or can they be repaired?

cheers,
Michael

I am pretty sure there is plenty of material on the flange to sand out the pits due to rust. Once you do that the copper exhaust gaskets will take up the irregularities.

The return on investment for your welding just depends on the condition of the rest of the muffler.

Thanks Jess. The rest of the muffler is in really good shape, it is just these flanges that are "the pits".

Cheers,
Michael

Michael glad to help, if you are really concerned you could just have someone weld on new flanges. 911s tend to get the bottoms of the flanges ground thin if folks go up steep driveways.

I've googled and looked at our host's site and can't find flanges for sale. Know where I can get some?

Love your signature! Been there, doing that!

Cheers,
Michael

Hmm, I used to stock parts at Napa and remember handling a ton of those flanges. Now if 911s use some weird diameter or bolt spacing then it won't help at all.

Try out some of these measurements. I put "2 bolt header flange" into Google and came up with Maryland Turbo with this pic.

thanks again!

I took the muffler in this morning to have the bungs welded on and they suggested filing the flanges a bit and not messing with it. Sounded like reasonable advice! I pick it up tomorrow ready to install for the weekend.

Cheers,
Michael
