Installed subwoofer under seat...
After being sick of a head unit that drops out left and right, and having the driver door speaker not work, and the passenger door speaker blown and distorted, and finding the head unit's wiring just twisted together and electric taped, i decided to do something about it. After all, this is MY car now, and i want it to sound good and be wired up properly.
Firstly i disconnected ground from the battery, and surrounded the battery terminal with latex gloves. Then i replaced both door speaker wiring with nice 12 gauge wire. This was a day on its own. On both doors i think i didnt use enough tape to use the old wire to pull the new wire through cause the tape broke. I ended up using a welding rod to pull the new wires through the door. Then i ripped out the old head unit and wiring harness. I found a fuse end twisted into the ignition wire with no other end attached or anywhere in site. I ripped all this out. Soldered the new wire harness for the new head unit in to all the connections i needed, and used heat shrink tubing to seal my connections. Went for a drive, and with the driver door speaker now working, car sounded much better. The blown one was hardly audible. Back to the garage... The KSC sub wasnt too bad to install. Had to remove the passenger seat tho to mount it. This was probably the hardest part of the install. Its such a pain in the ass getting that seat out, then back in. The bolts have to be hand tightened and loosened with an allen wrench. No sockets will work here. I wanted to keep the install as less intrusive as possible, so i ran wires under the carpet edges to where they arent visible. Under the seat midway, the wires come out from the side of the carpet and run across to the sub. All thats left, this weekend i need to replace the door speakers. But already, with having a passenger blown door speaker, the music sounds much more alive. They should call it the KSC-911. It fills out the cabin nicely with the right amount of bass. I never liked those BOOM BOOM honda civic systems. they litterally shake you up soo much, your eyeballs cant focus on the road. But the KSC just sounds pefect. You FEEL it kick, you FEEL the bass lines grove, but it isnt overpowering. By the way, im running my back deck speakers and door speakers off the head unit, and it sounds perfect. I still need to fine tune everything, but all in all it is a great simple setup that delivers. Ironically, i think the best part about this setup is when you turn it off, and hear the flat-6 behind you. Or if your like me, you get a mix 50 engine/50 stereo, and blast Panama from Eddie Van Halen while accelerating from a stand still. ![]()

Good deal.
Tip: they make sockets with Allen ends on them- so you can use a socket to remove/install the seats making it much easier. |

I sort of did the same a couple of years or so ago. I took out the aging Alpine AM/FM/Cassette head unit. I installed a Sony CDX-M630, stealth head unit. I already had upgraded Alpine door panel speakers, and the rear panel speakers. I did install the two 10" subs in the rear panel where the rear seats would have been, if it had them, along with a 1200watt amp under the pass. seat, with the rest of the matching Nakamichi components in the front trunk area. It sounds great! I also got a bonus in the deal, I got rid of a continual voltage drain from my battery. Apparently there was something in the old head unit that was eating up the voltage, and I was never able to trace it down, but since the change over, I didn't have to disconnect my battery to keep it from discharging in just a couple of days. I discovered this benefit when I forgot to disconnect the battery after zooming around for a few hours. I had previously installed a quick disconnect on the battery, because if I didn't disconnect it, it would drain the battery in just a couple of days or so. Since the new installation, there is no longer the drain on my battery, and I found this out when I forgot to disconnect the battery after a lively cruise and parked it in the garage. I didn't remember about disconnecting the battery for a couple of weeks. To my surprise, when I went to start it, I saw that I had forgotten to disconnect the battery, and I was getting the charger ready to charge it up, because of the previous history on the drainage, and just by chance I decided to try to start it, knowing that the battery would be low, but to my surprise, it fired right up, plenty of battery power. Now the only time I disconnect the battery is if I know that I am not going to use the car for an extended time. The new stereo system sounds awesome, but after a few months, I now hardly ever turn it on, because I now find that I rather listen to the music of my engine. My cab had the factory emblems saying the seating occupancy was 2, so I really didn't have a rear seat, just a small platform, but it was perfect for the two 10" subs to fit just right. I guess the stereo system might be an additional selling point if I decide to sell the car, which I am in the process of determining whether to do that or not right now. Good luck with the rest of your mods, Tony.

I'm soon to redo mine as well.....
That sweet engine is somewhat of a band, in itself,..that plays a certain style of music. Yet what makes it so different than the stereo is that it's music is SSOO"physically" interactive, real time. This, although, is not to say that other bands sound good, as well, interacting at a different level...I couldn't imagine driving my 911 without the ability to put in RUSH when I NEED to hear it. (and hear it well, too) ..yep, time to get the other bands in order... Best,

I did a Clarion SRV303 powered sub under the pass seat of my '84 (manual seats). Fits great, no need to remove seat. Not expensive either. Not thumping bass, but enough to really notice the difference. I don't have an external amp (yet, not sure if I will), Nakamichi CD400 deck, Infinity Kappa speaks in my Cab.
Glad to hear you're pleased.

Glad to hear things went well. Replacing the worn out stereo is one of my winter projects along with several other ones. I love great sounding music, but lately have been driving around just listening to the sound of the sweet, sweet motor

I don't listen to the stereo very much except on road trips, but I wanted a full sound so I installed an 8" sub behind the drivers seat with a Sony Amp in the trunk. The sub box just sits on the floor and disconnects quickly if I need the space. So far I haven't had any issues and I really enjoy the sound.

I forgot to mention that because it's a small sub box, the bass sound is very responsive but not a big "boom" sound.

Finally did a sub install in my 71E yesterday. I wasn't looking for anything loud, but the little door speakers just don't produce any bass. After shopping around I found that the Blaupunkt Thb 200A would fit perfect and had good reviews. Here's a picture of the install under my drivers seat:
![]() Sounds great so far, finally have some bass so my stereo doesn't sound to tinny. I'll better review when I get some miles on the road with it and tune all the different adjustments. Karl |

Question regarding your Sub intstall under the passenger seat? Did you have to build a box to enclose the sub? If so, how did you accomplish this?
Thanks, James |

Newbie question: how do you hold it in place under the seat? Do you put holes in the floor to screw it in?
