Webers Set up wrong for 1970T engine?
I just bought this 1970T and the previous owner did a lot of work to it, including putting used Webers on it. I did a full tune-up, including checking valves, timing, point gap, Weber float level height, and now my new plugs are caked with soot after 10 miles!!
I took a look at my carbs (remember I just bought the car) and they show the following writing-- 38.0, 175M, 150A. If these numbers are the venturi size, main air jet and idle jet sizes, they are all wrong for this engine. Searching the posts on this forum, the right sizes for the 2.2T are supposed to be 30 venturi, 125 main air, 180 idle. Any help on how to check the actual sizes on the carbs (I want to confirm the notations on the carbs before buying new stuff.) and start getting the right set-up would be appreciated. I am at sea level and the car has a Monza exhaust, I think. It is not stock, has a crossover pipe, and sounds like a Ferrarri. Thanks. Bill Harrison |
I think you will need to pull the jets to be certain what you have. The venturis may have the size imprinted where you could see this from above. The jets will have the size imprinted on the top or bottom. However, even the imprinted sizes on the jets could be wrong if someone decided to ream them open to a larger size.

Repeating what Roger siad. Take your jets to a shop to have them checked. It used to be common practice to just drill out the jets to a larger size making the markings on them useless. I have seen many webers with mismatched main, air, and idle jets.

50/55 idles 30/32 venturies 125/135 mains 180 air corrections sport exhaust 3.5 lbs fuel pressure with proper pump and return line to tank That should get you close for WOT driving and good throttle response. Will be a tad rich at start up. Try bumping up a heat range on the plugs. Good luck |
