Gas Guage Sending Unit

My gas guage has been reading erractic lately so I pulled the sending unit for a cleaning.

Took it apart and found some varnish on the float slides. Checked guage out of the tank got great readings.

Put it back in and bolted down what I thought was OK. No readings.

Removed several times OK out of tank. Put it back no readings

Finally got it to work back in the tank if I barely tightened the nuts.

What would cause the unit not to read if the nuts were tightened more than they are now?????

BTW did replace the gasket

bad ground or bad signal wire?

if tight = no sliding, seems there would still be a reading (tho static)
