Brake issue 76 912E
I took the newly purchased 912 for a short drive last night. The car had been sitting for quite awhile prior to my purchasing it (about 1.5 years). I noticed some rolling resistance after about a mile or two and pulled over into a parking lot. The right front rotor/caliper was dragging slightly. I decided to return home only to find that while in the parking lot, the brake pedal went straight to the floor with no pressure. I checked for fluidl leaks, none. I was able to get pressure back after a minute or so of pumping the pedal. Do the two seem related? Is this a sign of a bad Master Cylinder? any insight would be great. I'm not new to fixing cars, just new to Porsche's.
Thanks, Ryan

Pull the carpet up around the pedals and see what's happening down there. It sounds like a master cylinder and possibly the flex lines need some attention. You might also take a look here: http://www.912bbs.org/ for some more info. They have a very active 912E forum. Scott |

The caliper dragging may have caused the fluid to boil in/near the caliper, hence loss of brake pressure. If you need to rebuild the calipers, the 912E uses either "A" type or "M" type in the front. My "E" has the "A" type, whch have a 3.5 inch mounting bolt spacing. I'm in the process of rebuilding both front calipers and replacing the pads, bought from our host, of course. The front rotors should be solid and are common to a '69 era 911.
Here's a great link to rebuilding "A" type calipers: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_caliper_rebuild/911_caliper_rebuild.htm I'm guessing you have already been on 912bbs. Are you the Ryan with #1154 in NJ? Just let Aric know your serial number and other facts so he can update the 912E database. Fran |
