Door speakers: Are they all gaudy?

Anyone know of conservative looking door speakers for my 911? If so, where can I get them? The ADS speakers in my '88 are shot, and I need to replace them. But I can't find a new pair of 6.5" speakers that don't have that, "BLING BOYZ!" look.

PS: I'm not looking for high-end audiophile speakers. A $60 pair of speakers will perform more than adequately.

The Blaupunkt line have a few somewhat subdued selections. Link is to US dist.
No association, just put a St.Louis headunit, and 4x6 rear's in my SC. Door speakers and small sub to come after A/C upgrade is finished.

Man I feel you on this one I looked for months and after stopping in to a number of independent stereo shops a guy just handed me a pair. Most new speakers don't come with grills because they are used to upgrade stock systems. The pair I was given had silver screens but were otherwise plain and round. I bought some semi gloss rattle can gave 'em two shots and they look great. I looked at Pep-Boys and they were guady and expensive. Drop in on some of your local stereo install places and they'll have a bunch laying around.

Good luck,

Scott

P.S. Sorry I missread and thought you were just looking for screens, make sure what you buy has them.

I feel you.
This is about as plain as I can find. Even the Blaupunkts are tacky now.

Focal and MB Quart, a bit pricey although they have lower priced base models. Both can be found ebay. I've been told MB Quart is not what they once were. Both offer coax models. I've been researching this for sometime because I would like to restore my interior back to its 1978 look..which means OEM speaker grilles. The focals have a tweeter located in the center of the speaker that can be aimed and they sound great. The down side is that the tweeter sticks out about a half inch above the front of the speaker. For my application it will make the installation a challenge if I retain the stock grilles. If they are installed with the focal grilles they will blend nicely with the stock interior. They come with plain black grilles that are very much like the late Carrera style grilles. The plus is that both MB and Focal are blingless.

Does anyone know the breakdown of door speaker sizes and the years of production? I thought early (1974+) had 5.25 door speakers but I am willing to accept 6.5 if that was what they originally had. Can speakers be upgraded leaving the factory grills in place? What year did Porsche loose the dash speaker and go to door speakers?

I got a pair of very understated Blaupunkts from Crutchfield. Around that price point.

An alternative is to mount the speakers direcly to the sheet metal behind the door panel and then screw your stock speaker grills into the door panel to cover the speaker whole. I did this with my RS door panels because it was the only way I could get a decently stock looking fitment.

Those A/D/S speakers are probably the state of the art for the time they were installed. I'd be tempted to install another pair of the same. I think if you google the terms Reference and Speakers or Drivers you will come up with nice speakers that don't look too gaudy.

You might be able to find a conservative speaker grill at your local installer that will fit whatever speaker you decide to install. Many shops have old speaker grills sitting around that were not used in other installs.
