Backup lights
I have an "86" carrera, fuse #11 (16amp) blows when I put it in reverse. I chased this for a while and found it when I had directionals on and put shifter in reverse and it blows fuse. After fixing many wire problems caused by mice this is all I have left to do so I can get an inspection sticker. I searched the tech forum and found many simialr complaints. I have a few ?'s. Can i get to the switch and wire connections to it from the cover behind the seats on the floor? What side of the tranny is it on for my model driver or passenger? When it leaves the switch how does it get to the wiring/fuse block in the engine compartment and what side is that on? Darn car is so low I can't get my floor jack under it, waiting for the lifting pads but want to get this done this weekend.

forgot front pic. I know some of you don't like to help unless there's a picture of the car. Need to get it out of the garage for some exercise so I need a sticker.

the back up light switch is mounted on the front lower nose of the 915 tranny.
the wires should have a black rubber boot protecting it and the connection. the connection takes a beating and it's my best guess where the problem is. either go in there or buy a short circuit gizmo for $25 to search the wiring with.

I know the problem is between the switch and the backup lights themselves, just trying to figure out the route of the wires after the switch so I can track down the problem with some idea of the route they take into and through the engine compartment.

Update
For those that run into this problem this thread should be a help. I checked the switch and wires connected to it and they look new and are in perfect condition. They route back towards the engine compartment on passenger side. They go overthe starter (looking from under the car)(they are well cover by thick hose and protective tubing) and enter the engine compartment behind the air filter housing. Stopping and thinking about this now I am going to unplug the tail light harness from inside the engine compartment (back end corners)one at a time and try shifting in reverse and see if or when it blows the fuse, this amy further localize where the problem is. This is where the gray/brown wires are located in the harness. If this works it will cut my searching time by 2/3. Will get back and let all know how it goes.

Got it
It was so simple I wanted to scream. I unpluged the tail lights on the passenger side and tried the signal, all OK then put it in reverse, blown fuse. Unpluged the tail lights on the drivers side and turned on signal (flashing really fast probably due to not completed circuit) and then put it in reverse NO blown fuse. Not to leave anything uncovered I then plugged the passenger side back in and tested again No blown fuse. Ok so I dissasembled the tail light on drivers side, all looked ok so with the body out and back off of body I tried the test with the plug back in . No blown fuse and all lights worked with the backup lights on. Scratching my head I reassembled the body and did the test again, BLOWN FUSE, whats going on here. Took it apart again and saw it plain as day. the female connector on the backup light socket was bent up just enough so when I screwed down the back plate to the tail light body (body and back are all metal) it would touch the top of the female (spade) connector. Bent it down and then put heat shrink over it and the others that stuck up close (taking no chances) I then reassambled it and tested everything and now 100% . To think I blamed that one on the mice in the beginning. Monday off to inspection station but at least now I can feel safe driving it. Had a feeling the proiblem was in the back end of the car as there are one or 2, 5 amp fuses for the front directionals in the trunk fuse panel .. Hope this helps with any future problems with back up lights and signals.

if not bad wires at the switch I'd next go after the bulb sockets.

On my car the two wires from the switch go straight to the 14 pin connector in the rear panel.
edit: I guess I'm a little late.
