Car Stalling - HELP
 
I have an 84 Carrera with a stock 3.2 and it has 138k on it. :p
One day the engine stalled while driving, I turned the key and it fired right up only to stall again.
I have replace:
Fuel pump
Fuel pump check valve
Fuel filter
DME relay
Reference sensor
Speed sensor
I have had the DME module checked and tested - its fine.
Now BEFORE replacing the Ref and Speed sensors the engine would only idle for 15 seconds or so. AFTER replacing those sensors it will idle for 15 minutes or so, but when driving it'll only run for about 3 minutes - which sounds like a fuel problem to me, or am I wrong? But if it is a fuel problem, why would changing those 2 sensors (Ref and Speed) have an effect on the idle? I don't see the connection. Or am I chasing 2 different problems that have occured at the same exact time? :confused:
I appreciate any comments or ideas. I'm getting frustrated. :mad:

It sounds fuelish so I would check the fuel pressure while running (which is a pain). I picked up a cheap Harbor Freight fuel injection gauge, about 6 feet of fuel injection hose, and strung the gauge (very temporarily!) out from under the decklid, along the side of the car, and thru the driverside window so I could see it. (Wasn't my problem but prompted me to replace my injectors which was the problem.)(Injectors isn't your problem)

The 15 minutes and it dies is harder to do on an injected motor. On a carbureted motor it can take some time for the float bowls to dry out if there isn't enough fuel supply so it would be almost a certain thing on an early car. On your car we are left with what happens as it heats up...

Other things to check:
- The injector harness plug that is directly in front of the engine between the rear shock towers.
- The voltage going to the fuel pump. (You can hook in right under the seat.)
- The air gap between the crank sensors and the teeth on the flywheel.

Have you checked the head temp sensor specs hot and cold? How or who checked the DME box?

The head temp sensor is fairly new but can be tested to confirm.
The DME was checked out by a fellow Pelican who rebuilds them for local shops in the area.
