Argh! Fuel pump running, 3.5psi, replaced needle valve but no fuel in float gauge!

i see fuel in the glass filters, there is fuel in the tank (may have run dry earlier but added more) and pump is doing it's thing. it even registers 3.5 psi at the t before the glass filters (2.4, webers). float gauge is getting nothing though. i don't see anything going on in the filters though. just fuel in there but no bubbles or anything; is this right?

is this possible if the float is cutting fuel off too early? i'd think you'd get at least SOME fuel in the gauge. right?

FWIW I've purchased a new needle valve that was faulty out of the bag...

Put another shim under the needle seat.

If it takes too many, then you'll need to carefully adjust (bend) the tab on the float that contacts the needle, then fine tune the level with the shims.

Are you checking all 4 bowls, or just one?

At least one of them should be getting some fuel. Otherwise you've bent all your tabs too much upwards for the shims you have under the needle valves. I'd put a 1mm shim (the default fiber one will do - I think it's 1mm) and set the float tab with the 18mm/13mm setting we said in the other thread. This should fill your float bowls.

Blow into the needle valves to see if they're ok (don't get any spit in there ) but I very much doubt all four are bad.

will pull banjos and run pump to see if i get any fuel at all.

#3 cyl. float bowl is set properly and found this issue when going to #6 float bowl.

if fuel i'll set more shims.

If you got gas in the filters and the pump's working, it's got to be the needle valves not opening...for whatever reason.

turned on the pump and was so convinced i didn't have fuel going into the carbs i just loosened one of the needle caps.

i've got fuel.

turns out the floats were COMPLETELY out of whack. 15 minutes later all 4 are right on. off to walmart to pick up a couple batteries (current batt's are just shot) and will get back in there shortly.

If you haven't left yet go to Costco and pick up some kirkland signature batteries, they are the cheapest and highest rated. They are the premium end of battery made by johnson controls.

already got a pair from wally world but will check out Sam's club as well.

actually drove up the street to get gas and did a few loops around the neighborhood. pulls very hard in 2nd and 3rd (didn't get past that). #6 is spitting regardless of mixture adjustment (all others are adjusted per instruction) and my idle is a bit high (1250 or so) but otherwise seems to be working well.

The butterfly farts cannot easily mess up an idle at 1250. It's when you try to keep a 900 that things start going awry

Yes, but are the signature batteries sealed? I think not. For a 911, a battery must meet this one criteria.

BTW, Costco also carries Optima batteries, although their current pricing (since I last looked) isn't as much of a bargain compared to a couple of years ago.

The kirkland batteries are not sealed but why is that so important? Batteries don't just leak unless they are on their side. At least none of mine have ever leaked.

All non-sealed batteries vent to the outside of the case during charging. Vent vapors are water and acid. Vapor settles, then evaporates leaving behind acid that corrodes the base metal. It's just a matter of time before the front pan/battery boxes become holey. It's also called time-release chassis lightening.
